BACKGROUND
TRAFFIC, the wildlife trade monitoring network, works to ensure that trade in wild animals and plants is not a threat to the conservation of nature. We actively monitor and investigate wildlife trade and provide information to diverse audiences worldwide as a basis for effective conservation policies and programmes. TRAFFIC a strategic alliance of World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and is an international network based in dozens of countries on 5 continents.

TRAFFIC, in partnership with the US Agency for International Development (USAID), has been chosen to lead implementation of the ‘Reducing Opportunities for Unlawful Trafficking of Endangered Species’ (ROUTES) initiative over five years. ROUTES, brings together international conservation organizations, the transportation and logistics industry, donors and government agencies in an innovative partnership to disrupt wildlife trafficking by reducing the use of legal transportation supply chains. TRAFFIC requires a ROUTES Project Leader to direct, administer and coordinate the project and sustain and build partnerships.
JOB DESCRIPTION
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES
• Responsible for delivering, driving forward and managing the implementation of the ROUTES initiative.
• Providing technical, administrative and inspirational leadership for this work.
• Applying an insight-led, results-oriented and collaborative / co-design approach with sustainability at the heart of the effort for long term impact.
• Leading effective planning, delivery and strategy under the framework of USAID terms and conditions.
• Ensuring high quality outputs and analysis through tracking, review, guidance and sign off.
• Convening and facilitating meetings, relationship building and partnerships with collaborators and donors as part of a cross-sectoral and global approach.
• Managing staff, sub-agreements, reporting, work plans and budgets under rigorous project management systems.
• Liaising with TRAFFIC network staff, and the Project Management Team members to ensure cohesive results for the TRAFFIC elements of ROUTES implementation globally.

SPECIFIC DUTIES
• Lead responsibility for successful implementation of ROUTES, and managing a small project team based in Cambridge, UK and Washington, D.C.
• Ensuring technical quality and timely delivery of work plan activities; including rigorous evaluation of project activities and interventions, with adaptive management approaches to amplify project impact.
• Proactively managing relationships and fostering dialogue amongst an international community of ROUTES stakeholders and collaborators.
• Leading efforts to inform understanding amongst government, inter-government, private sector and civil society on significance of wildlife trafficking to the transportation and logistics sector.
• Proactively managing ROUTES relationships with USAID missions, initiatives and programmes for synergy and opportunities to collaborate.
• Developing advocacy / outreach materials to strengthen international and corporate approaches to addressing the transport sector’s role in the global trade of illegal wildlife products.
• Lead the compilation of reports, briefing papers and other communication materials, including technical review and sign-off, with quality control and timely submission.
• Responsible for capitalizing on the strategic opportunities that arise during the course of the project and ensuring solutions are self-sustaining in the long term.
• Developing concepts and proposals to leverage additional funding and technical resources to ensure the greatest potential of all phases of the initiative.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Required:
• University degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. corporate social responsibility, transport and supply chain logistics, sustainability, environmental studies).
• Significant and relevant professional work experience.
• Excellent skills in programme/ financial management, planning and project implementation.
• Good interpersonal and leadership skills and ability to work effectively as part of a small team, with respect for and sensitivity to multi-cultural approaches.
• Skills and experience in effectively communicating the mission and objectives to partners and team.
• Fluency and excellent writing skills in English.
• Ability to travel widely and frequently, to work under pressure across multiple time zones globally.
• Familiarity with standard word processing, spreadsheet, presentation and data base software, and with electronic communication technology.

Preferred:
• Experience relevant to any of the following: wildlife trade, corporate social responsibility, transport/logistics sector, public/private sector initiatives, law enforcement, and CITES.
• Good understanding of international transport sector and supply chain logistics, policies and regulations regarding international trade and conservation policies.
• Fundraising and donor management experience.
• USAID project implementation and financial management experience.
• Competency in any of the following languages an advantage: French, Chinese and Arabic.
• Media communications skills and experience.

The salary range for this position is £42,000 - £53,000 dependent on skills and experience.
