BACKGROUND
Within the Programme and Policy Group, the Science and Learning Unit works to coordinate science, learning and knowledge management within IUCN’s global programme. The unit also provides the Secretariat link with the IUCN Commission on Education and Communication (CEC), a network that drives change for sustainability. CEC has more than 700 members who volunteer their professional expertise in learning, knowledge management and strategic communication to achieve IUCN goals. The main responsibility of the Science and Learning Officer is to promote and build capacities to effectively use learning and knowledge management processes and tools within the IUCN community and to support IUCN’s evolving approach to knowledge management. In addition, the Officer will serve as the Secretariat focal point for the Commission on Education and Communication.
JOB DESCRIPTION
1. Promoting knowledge management and learning in IUCN’s programme (40%)
Knowledge management (KM) in IUCN comprises a range of practices used to identify, create, represent, distribute and enable adoption of insights and experiences founded on IUCN’s knowledge.

- Develop and support implementation of knowledge management tools and processes that promote learning and sharing across IUCN;
- Collaborate with IUCN’s Information Management Group (and the Enterprise Resource Planning System development) and Global Communications Unit in developing and implementing new knowledge management tools including web-based communication platforms and social networking tools;
- Support the design and facilitation of meetings and workshops to optimize the learning opportunities therein;
- Actively engage in communities of practice interested in knowledge management and learning in order to share and keep abreast of innovations in these fields, as well as fostering opportunities for collaboration.

2. Strategic support to the Commission on Education and Communication (40%)

- Engage with the Commission on Education and Communication’s (CEC) Steering Committee and membership to define and deliver the mandate and work plans;
- Support collaboration between the CEC and other Commissions and IUCN Secretariat, especially with IUCN Global Communications, on integrating Commission expertise on learning, knowledge management and communication tools and processes into delivery of IUCN’s Programme;
- Support CEC to deliver agreed results within IUCN’s programme, as far as possible, with respect to communication and fund-raising.

3. Supporting Science and Learning Unit management and administration (20%)

- Manage projects of the Science and Learning Unit, as assigned;
- Participate in ongoing management of the Science and Learning Unit including workplanning, budget management and network coordination.
REQUIREMENTS
  • A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in a field relevant to knowledge management and learning with a background in biodiversity conservation an advantage.

• A degree in a field relevant to knowledge management and learning.

• Excellent managerial, interpersonal and team building skills.

• Knowledge and experience of working with networks, learning and knowledge management tools and processes.

• Ability to work within and across highly diverse networks of professionals, to harness their strengths, and to effectively coordinate program delivery through such networks.

• A good understanding of IUCN including its decentralized structure, Membership and Commissions.

• Demonstrated written communication skills that will enable effective written communication.

• Adequate knowledge and skills in the use of relevant computer programmes.

• Successful experience in fund-raising.

• Fluency in written and spoken English and preferably one or more of IUCN’s other official languages (French and Spanish).

• Willingness to travel.
SALARY
The gross annual salary for this position is between CHF 86'330 and CHF 107'913, subject to deductions for social security contributions and second-pillar pension, and before tax. While this is an indicative amount effective as of the current date, changes may occur as per IUCN's compensation practices without prior notice. The same applies to other organisations hosted by IUCN.
