Project Manager - SWIPE

TRAFFIC International is a charity and limited company registered in the UK. TRAFFIC’s head office, based in Cambridge, UK, provides worldwide leadership, coordination, cross-regional and corporate functions. TRAFFIC’s local engagement is managed through programme offices operating under the auspices of the UK charity, with staff based in a hub office and at other strategic locations where necessary. Programme offices operate within a geographic area of responsibility focused on one or multiple countries where TRAFFIC aims to help deliver priority programme outcomes.
Successful Wildlife Crime Prosecutions (SWIPE) is an EU LIFE funded project, which aims to discourage and ultimately reduce wildlife crime by improving compliance with EU Environmental Law through increasing the numbers of successfully prosecuted offences. The project activities aim to boost the awareness and capacity of prosecutors and selected law enforcement authorities to ensure compliance with national and EU wildlife laws, to enhance cross-border knowledge exchange, and to increase cooperation between investigative agencies. The project is focusing on Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Spain and Ukraine. This position will have a strong focus on tackling wildlife trafficking.
Candidate will have to be eligible to work in Hungary / the EU.
• Ensure coordination and management of TRAFFIC’s components in the SWIPE project, including coordination with relevant project partners, development/use of project management tools, and taking adaptive project management actions.
• Ensure high quality of all project outputs and technical as well as financial reports.
• Implement relevant project activities involving TRAFFIC/WWF Hungary, in particular baseline data collection on wildlife crime in Hungary and development of national report; development of the SWiPE Wildlife Crime Information Portal to facilitate access to useful resources, including reports, training materials and databases; organization of national events (meetings with authorities and training).
• Researches a wide range of wildlife trade topics, including collection and analysis of data and information on wildlife trade and conservation and related legislation, and assists in the development and implementation of research, including the writing of reports on wildlife trade concerning Hungary and Europe.
• Communicates on the project’s activities, maintains internal and external information flows, and represents TRAFFIC as appropriate at national and international meetings.
SPECIFIC DUTIES
• Leads the implementation of a number of activities of the SWiPE project, coordinating with relevant partners.
• Provides technical assistance, data analysis, scientific and legal information and research support to the SWiPE project and to the project partners/TRAFFIC staff.
• Analyses data and information (trade data, legal information, available scientific and grey literature, etc.), produces scientific and technical documents and reports for internal and external use, and formulates policies and recommendations for the target appropriate audiences;
• Oversees activities by partners and consultants, as relevant.
• Oversees financial aspects of TRAFFIC´s component and supports financial admin and reporting
• Liaises with relevant partners including WWF and IUCN programmes and regional/national offices in Europe and keeps up-to-date and informed about activities related to wildlife conservation, trade and utilisation within Europe and maintains good working relationships with relevant partners.
• Communicates the nature and results of the work that TRAFFIC undertakes and represents TRAFFIC at designated international/national meetings and conferences, and reports on these meetings.
• Leads on reporting on TRAFFIC’s contributions towards the implementation of SWiPE.
• Other tasks related to TRAFFIC’s global conservation programme as agreed with the Programme Office Director.

• University (masters’) qualifications in ecology, resource management, environmental policy or law or an environmental policy-related focus. • Practical experience in international/national wildlife conservation preferably with government or an international/national Non-governmental Organisation (NGO) / Inter-governmental Organisation (IGO). • A good understanding of Hungarian and international nature conservation laws and agreements, and of relevant regulations and legislation in the European Union and in Hungary. • Experience in policy issues pertaining to wildlife trade and conservation, including the implementation of CITES. • Strong research, analytical and organisational skills, with attention to detail, experience in investigating and researching wildlife trade issues is a strong advantage. • Good knowledge of the functioning of the European Union and its environmental laws/policies. • Strong project management skills and demonstrated experience in project management, ideally in multi-country projects. • Experience in organizing events. • Experience in involvement in website development (planning technical content and structure) is a distinct advantage. • Experience in wildlife related law enforcement is also an advantage. • Ability to work under pressure and to set own work priorities as appropriate and a capacity to meet deadlines; • Fluency in spoken and written English and Hungarian; • Strong communication, analytical and presentation skills, including strong writing abilities in English; • An ability to work co-operatively as part of a small team with strong inter-personal skills and an ability to work in different cultural contexts; • Willing and able to travel; • Must be eligible to work in Hungary/the EU. |
