BACKGROUND
The Junior Professional (YP) will be an integral part of the Office of the Legal Adviser, which comprises a small team of staff based at IUCN Headquarters in Gland, Switzerland.

The Office of the Legal Adviser provides legal advice and services to all components of IUCN and in particular advises IUCN regarding (a) the interpretation of the IUCN Statutes, Regulations and Rules of Procedure of the World Congress; (b) the status and interests of IUCN under public international law; (c) the legal interests of IUCN under the laws of the nations where the Union operates, through analysis and application of comparative law and private international law; and (d) the legal aspects of the relationships established through IUCN’s contracts, trademarks, licenses, human resources agreements, service agreements, and other such undertakings.
JOB DESCRIPTION
With some degree of autonomy and responsibility, the Junior Professional will perform a variety of functions in the Office of the Legal Adviser, interacting closely with the Legal Adviser, the Senior Legal Officer and the Legal Officer, and providing research and analytical support to the team in a broad range of areas, including the following:
• Conduct legal research, write briefs and draft documents on a broad variety of legal issues as they arise (e.g. intellectual property, data protection, governance and legal status);
• Draft and review all types of contracts (e.g., lease agreements, contracts with private sector entities and other organizations, local authorities, service providers) and Memorandum of Understanding with appropriate guidance as necessary;
• Contribute to the project of streamlining IUCN Secretariat operational policies and procedures, including analyze, compare, review and draft internal procedures and policies with appropriate guidance as necessary;
• Provide support on any corporate matters that may arise including draft and review legal and corporate documents such as Power of attorneys and minutes of Meetings of IUCN’s distinct legal entities;
• Filing of contracts and other legal documents in paper and electronic form;
• Maintenance of OLA’s workflow electronic tool;
• Handle any other ad-hoc assignments.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Gross salary CHF 60'000.- per year subject to internal withholding tax (not applicable to Swiss nationals) and social security. The salary is a fixed amount, not negotiable.

Annual leave: 25 working days per year.

Benefits:

• CHF 320 per month (CHF 3,840 per year) cash contribution towards health insurance cover. Staff members are responsible for their own health insurance coverage;

• IUCN Pension scheme (6% employee and 7% employer contribution);

• Accident and Disability insurance (Zurich);

• Travel and emergency evacuation insurance on mission (TSM);

• You will be enrolled in the Swiss social security system which includes first pillar state pension, unemployment insurance and loss of earnings insurance.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Law school graduate, preferably with Swiss Law background;
• First experience in the review of contracts and other legal documents;
• Experience in online research of legal documentation, in analysis and ability to synthesize the information gathered;
• Ability to handle multiple tasks and responsibilities, to prioritize workload and to meet deadlines in a typically high pressure work environment;
• Good organizational skills and attention to detail;
• Excellent written and spoken English and French are essential for this position. Good working knowledge of Spanish would be an asset;
• Very good competence in the use of internet and Microsoft Office tools;
• Personal integrity, initiative, adaptability, and sound judgement;
• Ability to adapt to new environments, and to establish and maintain good working relations with individuals of different cultural backgrounds;
• Exposure to international work environments is a plus.
• A demonstrable commitment to using the opportunity of the position as a platform for professional development;

SALARY
The gross annual salary for this position is CHF 60'000, subject to deductions for social security contributions and second-pillar pension, and before tax. While this is an indicative amount effective as of the current date, changes may occur as per IUCN's compensation practices without prior notice. The same applies to other organisations hosted by IUCN.
