BACKGROUND
IUCN is a membership Union uniquely composed of both government and civil society organisations. It provides public, private, and non-governmental organisations with the knowledge and tools that enable human progress, economic development, and nature conservation to take place together.

Created in 1948, IUCN is now the world’s largest and most diverse environmental network, harnessing the knowledge, resources and reach of more than 1,400 Member organisations and some 18,000 experts. It is a leading provider of conservation data, assessments, and analysis. Its broad membership enables IUCN to fill the role of incubator and trusted repository of best practices, tools, and international standards.

IUCN provides a neutral space in which diverse stakeholders including governments, NGOs, scientists, businesses, local communities, indigenous peoples’ organisations, and others can work together to forge and implement solutions to environmental challenges and achieve sustainable development.

Working with many partners and supporters, IUCN implements a large and diverse portfolio of conservation projects worldwide. Combining the latest science with the traditional knowledge of local communities, these projects work to reverse habitat loss, restore ecosystems, and improve people’s well-being.

With support of the US Department of State, to host a new, international public-private partnership, End Plastic Pollution International Collaborative (EPPIC), the IUCN and three partners (The Ocean Foundation, Searious Business, and the Aspen Institute) aim to significantly reduce plastic waste and pollution in Central America (Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala), Southeast Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa by catalysing global partnerships to work collectively. The EPPIC partnership will aim to work globally and engage with a wide suite of stakeholders from the public and private sector, civil society, and academic organisations and initiatives whose collective support will be required to address plastic pollution.
By strengthening enabling environments, raising public awareness, and promoting multi-stakeholder engagement to enhance circularity across the plastics lifecycle, this program will maximise plastic circularity and prevent the release of plastic into the environment by utilising science-based decision making to catalyse solutions, innovation, and investments that bridge government, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and stakeholder actions.
The three objectives are:
• Increase knowledge on potential upstream and midstream, solutions to enable a just transition to circular approaches for plastic.
• Ensure policy and regulatory frameworks are supportive of science-based solutions to enable a just transition to circular approaches for plastic.
• Support science-based solutions and technologies to enable a just transition to circular approaches for plastic are implemented in target regions.
