BACKGROUND
TRAFFIC is the leading non-governmental organization working globally on trade in wild animals and plants in the context of both biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.

TRAFFIC International is a charity and limited company registered in the UK. TRAFFIC’s head office, based in Cambridge UK, provides worldwide leadership, coordination, cross-regional and corporate functions. TRAFFIC’s local engagement is managed through programme offices operating under the auspices of the UK charity, with staff based in a hub office and at other strategic locations where necessary. Programme offices operate within a geographic area of responsibility focused on one or multiple countries where TRAFFIC aims to help deliver priority programme outcomes. TRAFFIC works in strategic alliance with IUCN and WWF on wildlife trade issues.

The Wildlife Trade Analyst-Africa will be responsible for overseeing the input of wildlife trade data into TRAFFIC’s database for Africa, a task that will require attention to detail, corroboration of facts, referencing of sources and the maintenance of a high level of data quality. Data entered will enable the production of informative outputs on wildlife trade dynamics and will be developed in collaboration with other TRAFFIC staff. Wildlife trade dynamic reports will be produced for circulation to conservation practitioners and law enforcement entities including those responsible for regulation of the trade, for action and follow up.
JOB DESCRIPTION
DUTIES
1. Oversee data collection, input and analysis in Africa.

2. Oversee the compilation of existing data on wildlife trade dynamics in Africa, including market surveys, seizures, arrests, convictions, and any other information concerning the legal, illegal and unsustainable wildlife trade and conduct additional research to ensure the correct referencing of data. Data will need to be entered in a scientific format for ease of analysis and according to the standard operating procedures that TRAFFIC uses. Ensure that, where possible, all information is accurately geocoded to enable mapping of the wildlife trade at a later stage.

3. Conduct research and analysis of wildlife trade for relevant policy fora including CITES, SADC, EAC, AU, COMIFAC and IOC

4. In close collaboration with project managers, produce assessments on species in trade that will help determine and guide future priorities for combating illegal and unsustainable wildlife trade. Analyse data and prepare reports for conservation practitioners and government authorities responsible for wildlife trade regulation and conservation action and represent TRAFFIC on policy and management decision-making bodies such as the abalone and West Coast Rock Lobster Scientific Working Groups.

5. Monitor and review the input of data by staff, interns and volunteers.

6. Assist with the training of wildlife law enforcement and other relevant government officials on data capture and analysis.

7. Carry out routine audits and gap assessments to improve targeting of further data collection efforts.

8. Develop formal and informal partnerships with conservation partners to improve the collection of data relevant to understanding wildlife trade dynamics. Play an active role in negotiating and managing data-sharing agreements with partner organisations, government entities, civil society organisations and NGO’s on the African continent in conjunction with project leaders, the TRAFFIC Southern Africa Senior Programme Coordinator and the TINT co-ordinator.

9. Raise awareness, in close collaboration with the TRAFFIC communications team, of the extent and impacts of wildlife crime on the conservation of threatened species with key partners, stakeholders and community audiences. Assist with the production of articles for publication in the TRAFFIC Bulletin on the trends and implications of illegal and unstainable wildlife trade.

10. Provide training and guidance to TRAFFIC staff in Africa on data collection, analysis and use of WiTIS database.

11. Attend meetings and present on data analysis results and methodologies, as required.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be eligible to live and work in South Africa;
• A postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. data-analysis and/or applied statistics, criminology, biology, law, economics or another relevant social science).
• Minimum of three years’ experience with the collection and collation of scientific data;
• Minimum of two years’ experience of data analysis;
• Experience of database software (ideally IBM’s i2 software). Experience with compilation and analysis of data in Excel and with GIS software. Experience with statistical analysis is an advantage;
• An eye for detail and a keen interest and ability to recognise connections between data;
• Good interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively as part of a diverse team as well as independently, with respect for and sensitivity to multi-cultural approaches;
• Ability to work independently and under pressure and to set own work priorities as appropriate and a capacity to meet deadlines.
• Familiarity with and an interest in conservation, particularly wildlife trade issues;
• Fluency in English with excellent English writing skills– with working knowledge of French and any African languages an advantage;
• Independent thinker able to show initiative in developing innovative approaches;
• Willingness to travel within Africa and overseas, as required.
