BACKGROUND
JOB DESCRIPTION
Regional Forest Landscape Restoration Coordinator will:

6.1 Assume overall responsibility for the timely and quality delivery and management of in-country landscape restoration assessments in select countries in the region including but not limited to Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya and Ethiopia.

6.2 Oversee and direct multi-disciplinary teams consisting of IUCN staff, national partners, and/or contractors to analyse and adopt innovative approaches to landscape restoration opportunities.

6.3 Provide strategic insight, appropriate high-level support and interface for activities with governments, private sector, NGO’s and local communities.

6.4 Supported by the Regional Office in Nairobi, take a lead in the relationship with the Government of Rwanda, and the establishment and management and heading up a functioning IUCN Regional FLR Hub in Kigali, including taking the position of Head of Office, Kigali and following up the agreement with the Ministry of Natural Resources - MINIRENA.

6.5 Lead technical teams and develop work plans for the in-country national assessments of forest landscape restoration including coordinating specialists in the use of:
o GIS spatial analysis
o Land-use & economic modelling
o Leading participatory mapping exercises & validation workshops
o Deploying the enabling conditions diagnostic
o Putting in place systems and approaches for monitoring of early adoption and delivery of results and impacts.

6.6 Manage forest landscape restoration projects in the region including
o Design, Monitoring, Reporting and Evaluation
o Budgeting and budget management
o Donor and partner relationship management.

6.6 Support and where appropriate lead in the development and submission of concepts and funding proposals for expansion of the FLR programme in the region.

6.7 Develop frameworks and partnerships for scaled up interventions and implementation in Bonn Challenge partner countries. This will include:
o Engaging directly with Bonn Challenge countries and organizations (and potential country pledges) on the definition, management and delivery of their pledges.
o Working closely with colleagues, partners, collaborators and stakeholders to ensure alignment of efforts and effective prioritization and deployment of resources.

6.8 Provide intellectual and strategic leadership to a multidisciplinary team to assess forest landscape restoration opportunities at the national and subnational levels and further develop/strengthen the Regional Hub for FLR.

6.9 Facilitate integration of the technical missions with broader work of the IUCN GFCCP.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Master’s degree in forestry/agroforestry, natural resources management, biodiversity conservation or other relevant discipline;

• Minimum 7-10 years of experience in developing, managing and implementing multi-stakeholder projects with defined objectives, deliverables, monitoring and evaluation of results, including proven experience working in Eastern and Southern Africa;

• Demonstrated understanding of issues related to land-use dynamics at the field, national and international level;

• A good knowledge on land-use dynamics, and its social, environmental and economic implications;

• Good knowledge and experience of GIS spatial analysis and land-use modelling for natural resource management;

• Ability to work effectively within a large decentralized workforce of professionals of different nationalities and to mobilize it towards common goals

• Strong networks into development and research organizations worldwide.

• Excellent communication skills in English. Good written and spoken abilities in French is an asset.

• Good computer skills in MS-applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook).

• Ability and willingness to travel extensively within the region and beyond
