BACKGROUND
IUCN’s vision is a just world that values and conserves nature. To achieve this, the Union brings together over 1,400 Member organisations, around 15,000 expert Commission members and a Secretariat of about 1,000 staff. The Digital Community Manager is responsible for helping to harness the power of the Union by developing and curating a new online digital zone that engages with and builds an online community of IUCN Members, members of IUCN expert Commissions, and IUCN staff.
JOB DESCRIPTION
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strategy
• To develop a strategy for a new online digital zone with the objectives to inform, engage and mobilize IUCN Members and members of IUCN commissions in support of the IUCN mission to conserve and value nature for all.
Digital Member Zone (Content)
• To create, develop and post content that attracts, engages and retains Members (both IUCN Members and IUCN commission members) in the digital Member zone.
• To source content from across IUCN (Commissions, Secretariat and Members) and package the content to meet the needs of the target audiences and position IUCN as a thought leader.
• To work with colleagues across IUCN to create and/or package content in a digital form (from online events to digital storytelling).
• To implement campaigns, innovative approaches and tactics that expand and retain the number of Members and time spent on the digital Member zone.
• To moderate and facilitate discussions and groups on the platform to maximize two-way interaction between members and also establish and cultivate a group of champions of the platform to do the same.
• To monitor and evaluate the usage of the digital member zone and member feedback to further inform the content and campaigns to maximize the use of the zone and build an online community.
Digital Member Zone (Functionality)
• To develop the functionality of the digital member zone and its integration with relevant IUCN systems in cooperation with relevant technical experts in order to equip the platform with the functionality that attracts and retains users.
• To develop the usability of the digital member zone in cooperation with the relevant technical experts in order to make the platform as user friendly and as easy to use as possible.
• To act as the primary administrator for the digital member zone, solving first level technical issues as well as training and guiding both users and other administrators in its use.
• To monitor and evaluate the usage of the digital member zone and member feedback to further inform the functionality and usability to maximize the use of the zone.

Other
• Create and maintain a content-sharing schedule across the digital member zone and other member communication channels (newsletters, web announcements).
• Coordinate the development of and data entry into the CRM to maximise the potential of the system to build relations with members.
• Responsible for developing and maintaining content for the membership section of the IUCN website.
• Work closely with colleagues in the Membership and Commission Support Unit and the Global Communications Unit to continuously optimize content strategy.
• Provide cover and follow up when necessary during absences of team members from the membership unit.
• Perform other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Please Note: The above TORs contain the main responsibilities and duties of this position. However in an ever evolving organisation such as IUCN staff members are expected to show flexibility in their approach to work and be willing to undertake other tasks that are reasonably allocated to them but which are not part of their regular TORs. Where any task becomes a regular part of staff member’s responsibilities, the TORs should be changed in consultation between the manager, the staff member and the HR Unit. Any one of the three may initiate the consultation.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in a relevant field.

• At least 3 years work experience in digital communications or marketing including how to reach and engage new audiences, as well as producing and sourcing digital content to meet the needs of target audiences. Content will range from online events to digital storytelling. Experience in building online communities that achieve strategic objectives essential. Experience in marketing for different cultures and internationally an advantage.

• Demonstrable editorial judgement in posting and packaging content, and in developing online activities that elicit desired actions by target audiences and are aligned with an organization’s brand.

• Experience in identifying communication opportunities that enhance the organisation’s reputation and build stronger connections with the community and stakeholders.

• Knowledge and interest in the environment, conservation and sustainable development, and experience in working for an organisation in one of these fields. In particular, at least 3 years’ experience in developing content that makes complex content clear, informs conservation action and/or influences the conservation agenda.

• Fluency in spoken and written English (comparable to mother tongue) is essential. Good knowledge of French and/or Spanish is a strong advantage.

• Good understanding of copyright and intellectual property laws regarding others’ online content.

• Up to date with the latest technologies regarding digital communications including online community platforms, CRM systems, email lists, social channels, multimedia, online events, and content management systems.

• Good troubleshooting skills to ensure access to digital platforms and solve compatibility issues across publishing platforms

• Good understanding of analytics and KPIs for testing and tracking the performance of the digital members’ zone and informing future activities within it.

• Thorough knowledge of modern office procedures, proven ability to work in the Windows environment (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Microsoft Outlook) and to use the internet.

• Ability to function effectively in a team with initiative, creativity and flexibility.

• Willing to assist colleagues in accordance with work priorities.

• Personal diplomacy and discretion.

• Service oriented.

• Ability to work proactively.

• Ability to interact with IUCN staff from other programmes in Gland and from Regional and Country Offices as well as people from different cultures.
SALARY
The gross annual salary for this position is between CHF 100'355 and CHF 125'444, subject to deductions for social security contributions and second-pillar pension, and before tax. While this is an indicative amount effective as of the current date, changes may occur as per IUCN's compensation practices without prior notice. The same applies to other organisations hosted by IUCN.
