Within the Species Conservation Action (SCA) Team, which includes the IUCN Save Our Species Programme, the Grants Coordinator will play a key role in expanding the SCA and IUCN SOS project portfolio, establishing sound and efficient procedures in grant-making and coordinating complex species conservation initiatives.

IUCN Save Our Species (SOS) supports science-based conservation action on the ground that saves animals, plants and fungi from extinction. We focus our efforts where they will have the biggest impact by funding frontline conservation organisations across the world who have unique knowledge of their region and the local biodiversity.

IUCN SOS is IUCN’s response to the challenges identified by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™, mobilising IUCN’s unique knowledge and expertise of the members of the Species Survival Commission (SSC) and its many Specialist Groups.

Strategic coordination and portfolio development
• Identify suitable donors and develop concepts and proposals to fund projects and initiatives on species conservation action to build the IUCN SOS and SCA portfolio.
• Ensure that the SCA portfolio contributes to delivering action on the ground to priority species in line with globally agreed strategies and policies.
• Help design and shape the SCA project portfolio to maximise species conservation impacts together with appropriate protected and conserved area/habitat management methods and through the enhancement of protected and/or conserved area (PCA) governance and the involvement of indigenous peoples.
• Ensure that the IUCN SOS project portfolio as a whole is aligned to global, regional and national conservation and sustainable development policy goals and obligations.
• Mobilise the expertise of the Species Survival Commission, World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA), IUCN members and IUCN Secretariat in the implementation of initiatives.
• Develop an IUCN SOS logical framework to serve as the basis to build IUCN SOS initiatives.
• Establish a solid SCA monitoring framework ensuring that it aligns to IUCN’s M&E corporate framework and that is integrated in the IUCN Grants Portal.
• Adopt a tailor-made Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS) process for all IUCN SOS initiatives in line with IUCN policies.

Portfolio management
• Coordinate several IUCN SOS initiatives, including the African Wildlife initiative.
• Develop/update the IUCN SOS Operational Manual and procedures as needed.
• Revise current IUCN SOS procedures and templates, and identify and implement efficiencies in the grant-making process.
• Ensure that all grants are processed and managed through the IUCN Grant-management portal in line with the guidelines and protocols set out in the IUCN SOS Operational Manual, and according to donor contracts.
• Coordinate the project portfolio of selected complex initiatives so that it yields programme/portfolio level metrics and data from robust indicators, and inform decision-making and programme/project refinement to maximise conservation impacts.
• Ensure that social, environmental and climate safeguard policies are met according to IUCN ESMS process.
• Establish Technical Advisory Groups for selected initiatives and work directly with them in project selection, portfolio development and capacity building activities.
• Monitor grants and organise and conduct project monitoring missions as well as prepare mission reports.
• Review progress and final reports submitted by grantees and monitor grantees’ implementation for selected initiatives.
• Ensure that all financial management tasks of selected initiatives are conducted in an efficient and timely fashion, including audits.
• Prepare programme technical and financial reports for selected initiatives as stipulated in the donor agreements.
• Prepare the documentation for selected initiatives needed for issuing calls for proposals, including guidleines for applicants, templates, etc.
• Ensure that the review of proposals is done according to IUCN SOS procedures; assist in the review of proposals from SCA.
• Lead the process for projects evaluations for selected initiatives according to IUCN policies and the donors’ requirements.
• Lead the organisational development and capacity-development activities of selected initiatives, including capacity to develop fundable proposals, capacity to implement projects and capacity to learn and build related knowledge about conservation programmes supported by grant-funding.
• Support IUCN’s communications team to ensure good quality project communication outcomes.

Policy engagement and relationship management
• Build relationships with IUCN SOS donors and other donors to maximise conservation investments and impacts.
• Ensure that the learnings from selected initiatives is incorporated into IUCN policy engagement at regional and global levels for enhanced conservation effectiveness.

• Supervise staff and external consultants.
• Develop relationships with other IUCN Teams and Centres, and staff within regions and country offices in order to develop joint working practices.
• Contribute to IUCN's knowledge products by collating and inputting data from projects outputs.
• Contribute to harmonising the different grant making mechanisms within the Centre for Conservation Action and help shape IUCN's grant making and conservation strategy as a whole.
• Represent IUCN at relevant fora and events.
  • University degree, preferably at the Master’s level or above in biodiversity conservation, environmental science or related field.

• At least 7 years’ experience relevant to nature conservation.

• Broad international experience, a good understanding of wildlife management and sustainable development issues and familiarity with the main policies affecting species conservation.

• Experience in implementing or managing projects on the ground – an advantage.

• Project management experience; experience in grant-making is an advantage.

• Experience in supervising staff and developing project management teams.

• Solution-oriented approach: demonstrates a ‘thinking outside the box’ attitude.

• Demonstrated ability for critical thinking, analysis and strategic planning.

• Proven ability to bring ideas from concept through to realisation and implementation.

• Outstanding writing and editing skills; strong attention to detail.

• Strong interpersonal and presentation skills.

• English – native level; other languages (particularly French and Spanish) an advantage.

• Ability to take initiative, exercise good judgment, think laterally and resolve complex issues in a dynamic and changing environment.

• Ability to cope with varied workload and flexible working hours, and able to work independently.

• Willing and able to travel internationally as required.

• A demonstrated high-level ability to work in a multi-cultural, international organisation, applying high standards of respect, tolerance and support required.
The gross annual salary for this position is between CHF 100'355 and CHF 125'444, subject to deductions for social security contributions and second-pillar pension, and before tax. While this is an indicative amount effective as of the current date, changes may occur as per IUCN's compensation practices without prior notice. The same applies to other organisations hosted by IUCN.
