The Convention on Wetlands is an intergovernmental treaty that provides the framework for national action and international cooperation for the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands and of wetland biodiversity and services. It was the first of the modern global multilateral environmental agreements and remains the only one devoted to a specific critical ecosystem.
The Convention Secretariat has its headquarters in Gland, Switzerland, where the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) provides some administrative services to the Convention’s Contracting Parties for the operations and implementation of the Convention.
Under the supervision of the Communications Manager, the post-holder provides communications support and undertakes assigned activities and tasks to increase public awareness about wetlands and the Convention.
1. Communications
Contribute to the development, management and maintenance of the Convention’s website www.ramsar.org; contribute to the overall web strategy and creates web content, updates, announcements, news, press releases, presentations, publications, other materials;

• Support the Secretariat’s communications through drafting of documents and materials as requested;
• Support the Secretary General’s outreach and communication with Contracting Parties through the drafting of messages.
• Oversee the production of the Convention on Wetlands newsletter (4 times a year); identifies story lines for each newsletter highlighting the work and progress of the Secretariat in fulfilling its mandate and relating it to global processes; drafts the foreword for the Secretary General, monitors statistics;
• Manage assigned social media accounts with responsibility for proposing a strategy for the assigned platform(s) and generating content under the direction of the Content Communications Officer;
• Monitor and tracks usage and user experience with the Convention website, social media platforms and other publicly available resources and provides regular reports to the DSG and management;
• Lead on the production of internal videos to including filming and post production. Manage the Convention’s YouTube channel. Serve as the Secretariat focal point with external video consultants and vendors;
• Carry out communications outreach for outputs from subsidiary bodies, including STRP and CEPA outputs and publications;
• Oversee the design and production of print and electronic documents and communications assets which may include reports, technical guidance, promotional materials, flyers, social media assets, web pages, etc. Serves as the Secretariat focal point with external graphic designers;
• Respond to various communications requests and inquiries from internal staff and external stakeholders;
• Ensure relevant communications lists and contacts in the CRM are current and up to date;
• Administer contracts, procurement processes, and invoices for various consultants and vendors.

2. Branding
• Ensure that brand guidelines are followed within the Secretariat and serve as focal point for brand related matters with external stakeholders;
• Undertake an annual review of the Convention website to ensure content is current and that brand and style guidelines are followed;

3. Signature Events and Campaigns
• Manage and implement signature events and campaigns as assigned (e.g. World Wetlands Day) to increase the visibility and influence of the Convention through engaging with influencers and the public through social and other media;
• Monitor event and campaign budgets and ensure that activities are executed within budget. Source and manage external contractors as required;
• Conduct post-event and campaign evaluations and analysis and make recommendations for improving the performance and effectiveness of events and campaigns against objectives.

The above job description contains the main duties and responsibilities for this position. However, in the Secretariat of the Convention on Wetlands staff members are expected to undertake other tasks that are reasonable allocated to them, but which are not part of their regular job description. Where any task becomes a regular part of an employee’s responsibilities, the job description will be changed in consultation with the employee and the Human Resources Management Group.
  • A commitment to nature conservation and sustainable use.

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in business, communications, international studies or other relevant field.

• Minimum of five years’ experience in a communications role in an international setting.

• Strong writing and editing skills; ability to turn technical information into compelling stories and to prepare high quality written communications (correspondence, briefs, proposals, reports, etc.).

• Experience in using design software and producing high quality print documents and social media assets.

• Demonstrable experience in video production.

• Experience in developing social media content and managing social media channels.

• Experience working with web content management systems.

• Experience in creating and planning targeted communications campaigns.

• Fluent in spoken and written English. French and Spanish language skills beneficial.

• Ability to work independently and deliver quality products within agreed deadlines. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

• A strong aptitude and ability to communicate both informally and formally. Well-developed presentation, interpersonal and networking skills.

• Experience working in a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary environment.
The gross annual salary for this position is between CHF 86'330 and CHF 107'913. While this is an indicative amount effective as of the current date, changes may occur as per IUCN's compensation practices without prior notice. The same applies to other organisations hosted by IUCN.
