BACKGROUND
ORGANISATIONAL BACKGROUND
TRAFFIC is the leading non-governmental organization working globally on trade in wild animals and plants in the context of both biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.

TRAFFIC International is a charity and limited company registered in the UK. TRAFFIC’s head office, based in Cambridge UK, provides worldwide leadership, coordination, cross-regional and corporate functions. TRAFFIC’s local engagement is managed through programme offices operating under the auspices of the UK charity, with staff based in a hub office and at other strategic locations where necessary. Programme offices operate within a geographic area of responsibility focused on one or multiple countries where TRAFFIC aims to help deliver priority programme outcomes. TRAFFIC works in strategic alliance with IUCN and WWF on wildlife trade issues.


PROJECT BACKGROUND
TRAFFIC has been chosen by the US Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) to implement a project in Ecuador, and Colombia, and additional airports in key countries later in the projects (e.g. Mexico, Brazil, tbd.). The project will build on TRAFFIC’s expertise in wildlife trade issues and its previous successes in supporting the aviation sector to strengthen their practices against wildlife trafficking through the USAID ROUTES Partnership.

The salary range for this role is USD 36,000 - 52,000 per year dependent on skills and experience.
JOB DESCRIPTION
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES
The individual is responsible for managing and implementing the INL-funded initiative to combat illegal wildlife trade at key airports in Latin America. Their role includes providing technical, administrative, and inspirational leadership, emphasizing a results-oriented, collaborative approach with a focus on sustainability. They operate within the United States Government's framework and ensure the delivery of high-quality outputs through monitoring, review, and guidance. Additionally, they oversee project staff, sub-agreements, reporting, budgets, and project management systems.

This position will also provide broader strategic leadership for TRAFFIC’s work in Latin America, including building new partnerships to ensure that trade in wild species is legal and sustainable in the region, for the benefit of people and the planet.

SPECIFIC DUTIES
• Lead responsibility for successful implementation of the INL LAC project, and managing a small project team of staff and consultants based in Quito, Ecuador.
• Ensuring technical quality and timely delivery of work plan activities; including rigorous evaluation of project activities and interventions, with adaptive management approaches to amplify project impact.
• Managing contracts and coordinating activities with partners and engaging relevant stakeholders of the focal airports.
• Leading efforts to inform understanding amongst government, inter-government, private sector and civil society on significance of wildlife trafficking to the transportation and logistics sector.
• Proactively managing TRAFFIC relationships with US posts, initiatives and programmes for synergy and opportunities to develop TRAFFIC’s work programme and collaborate more broadly in the LAC region.
• Lead the compilation of technical and financial reports, briefing papers and other communication materials, including technical review and sign-off, with quality control and timely submission.
• Responsible for capitalizing on the strategic opportunities that arise during the course of the project and ensuring solutions are self-sustaining in the long term.
REQUIREMENTS
  • • University degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. corporate social responsibility, transport and supply chain logistics, sustainability, environmental studies).
• A minimum of eight years of professional work experience relevant to nature conservation, preferably within an international NGO and with work experience in at least one Latin American country (and preferably across several countries within the LAC region).
• Good understanding of international transport sector and supply chain logistics, policies and regulations regarding international trade and conservation policies.
• Experience in working with government and intergovernmental agencies, non-governmental organisations, civil society, private sector and other conservation partners across the LAC region
• Excellent skills in programme/ financial management, planning and project implementation.
• Good interpersonal and leadership skills and ability to work effectively as part of a small team, with respect for and sensitivity to multi-cultural approaches.
• Skills and experience in effectively communicating the organisation and project mission and objectives and developing strong collaborations with partners
• Fluency and excellent writing and speaking skills in Spanish and English, with competency in Portuguese being an advantage.
• Ability to travel widely and frequently, to work under pressure across multiple time zones globally.
• Familiarity with standard word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and data base software, and with electronic communication technology.
• Experience relevant to any of the following: wildlife trade, corporate social responsibility, transport/logistics sector, public/private sector initiatives, law enforcement, and CITES.
• Fundraising and donor management experience.
• USG project implementation and financial management experience is an advantage.
• Media communications skills and experience.
