TRAFFIC, the wildlife trade monitoring network, works to ensure that trade in wild animals and plants is not a threat to the conservation of nature. We actively monitor and investigate wildlife trade and provide information to diverse audiences worldwide as a basis for effective conservation policies and programmes. TRAFFIC is a strategic alliance of World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and is an international network, organised into six regional programmes.

This position will be responsible for managing the TRAFFIC database and ensuring the ongoing collection and global collation of TRAFFIC data on illegal wildlife trade; ensuring these data, received from a wide variety of sources, are entered into the specialist software system; and carrying out analyses of the data as time allows. The position will also line manage the data entry assistant role

The salary for this position is £30,000 - £38,000 per annum (dependent on skills and experience)

Characteristic Duties

We are now looking for someone to join our passionate team to be responsible for managing the TRAFFIC database. This position will be responsible for ensuring the ongoing collection and global collation of TRAFFIC data on illegal wildlife trade; ensuring these data, received from a wide variety of sources, are entered into the specialist software system; and carrying out analyses of the data as time allows..

Specific Duties

Database Management (the bullets deleted below should fall under Mary’s purview with assistance from Softwerx)
• Managing and administering TRAFFIC’s database;
• An awareness and understanding of the UK Data Protection Act 1998 and upcoming GDPR;
• Maintaining an understanding of system security features and protocols;
• Ensuring information is being entered correctly, carrying out data quality control and ensuring information is retained correctly;
• Assessing regional capacity for information collection and identifying where gaps exist, and looking at ways to address those gaps;
• Ensuring that database problems are investigated, diagnosed and resolved, referring to database users, other staff and suppliers as necessary;
• Maintain and update the team SharePoint document libraries and guidelines webpage;
• Provide training, support and guidance to data entry staff and analysts.

Data Standardisation
• Setting standards across the network for data collection and ensuring templates and guidelines are kept up to date;
• Developing training tools and providing training and on-going support for staff engaged in activities including data entry, analysis and related topics;
• Working with colleagues to progress data input into the database;
• Working with regional staff and dedicated project managers to compile information required for donor reporting, project metrics, and other project deliverables.

Information Sharing
• Be the focal contact for the information request and sharing processes, including managing all agreements;
• Design, maintain and implement regular and ad hoc data exports and datasets, querying the IBM i2 Database and using Microsoft Excel;
• Liaising with internal and external stakeholders to initiate new agreements and provide advice and guidance as required;
• An awareness of the UK Data Protection Act with regards to data sharing.
