BACKGROUND
IUCN India Country Office is initiating a project in Munger district, Bihar, with an aim towards ‘sustainable agriculture’ which incorporates ecological and biodiversity concerns and supports livelihood improvements. This will be achieved through the development of an Agriscape plan which will support implementation on the ground and ensure its replication in other landscapes. The learning from this project would be developed in form of a decision support toolbox which can be used to enhance the sustainability of agriculture in various parts of the country. This entails study of the agro-ecosystems and surrounding ecosystems to analyze their biodiversity and health status in general, as well as trends of ecosystem services. This will enable the program to design suitable ecosystem based interventions to promote crop productivity while establishing sustainability of various ecosystem services: recycling of nutrients, regulation of local micro-climate, regulation of local hydrological processes, regulation of the abundance of undesirable organisms, pollination service and detoxification of noxious chemicals, among others, which will further help in reducing over-dependence of agriculture on external inputs.
