BACKGROUND
In close cooperation with the IUCN ECARO Director and the Global Communications Unit, the Regional Communications Officer (RCO) will be responsible for overseeing and coordinating brand management and communications activities in Eastern Europe, North and Central Asia. The priority tasks of the Regional Communications Officer will include management and implementation of project activities related to communications and outreach. In addition, the Regional Communication Officer will ensure the overall coordination of all IUCN ECARO activities aiming to increase IUCN’s brand awareness and visibility and promote IUCN’s mission, values and knowledge products in the region.
In pursing the objectives and tasks of this regional position, the RCO will closely cooperate and coordinate activities with the IUCN Commission on Education and Communications, members and partners in the region.
JOB DESCRIPTION
PROJECT COMMUNICATIONS

• Ensure ECARO project proposals include communications and visibility components
• Implement communication activities for ECARO projects in coordination with project managers
• Ensure projects communication is effective, strategic, results-oriented, coherent and consistent with IUCN policy and ECARO communications objectives and practices
• Provide strategic communications support and guidance to other projects based on consultation with project managers
• Comply with all administrative reporting schedules, including input on reports to donors for communications components of projects

CORPORATE COMMUNICATIONS
• Oversee IUCN brand management and communications in Eastern Europe, North and Central Asia
• Oversee and coordinate regional media and public relations
• Ensure staff understand and adhere to corporate communications principles and protocols
• Manage the IUCN ECARO web page and ensure it’s regularly updated with news, information on projects and relevant activities, including news from members and commissions
• Produce web stories, article, summaries and publications for IUCN and external channels
• Edit the IUCN ECARO regional newsletter
• Coordinate the preparation and timely publishing of ECARO annual reports
• Proactively engage with the Global Communications Unit by participating in coordination calls and meetings, contributing to corporate reports and web stories
• Maintain proactive media relations and ensure increased media presence in the region
• Ensure IUCN staff is acquainted with the principles of media relations, risk and crisis management
• Ensure effective use of IUCN resources in maintaining IUCN brand quality and recognition
• Maintain contacts with IUCN offices and constituency to help ensure coordination of IUCN ECARO’s communications and media relations
• Keep IUCN ECARO staff abreast of any changes with the IUCN publishing guidelines
• Ensure IUCN ECARO is represented at major global, regional and national events
• Act as the regional focal point for the IUCN Global Communications Unit and the IUCN Commission on Education and Communication

OTHER DUTIES
• Carry out other relevant tasks on request and agreement with the line manager
REQUIREMENTS
  • 5 years of professional experience in a field related to communications and outreach;

• Bachelor's level university degree in field of Communications, Journalism, International Relations, Public Affairs, Political Science, Environmental studies or other relevant field;

• Knowledge and understanding of nature conservation and sustainability issues;

• Proven ability to work with multi-disciplinary groups in an interdisciplinary and intercultural environment;

• Capacity to work effectively under time pressure and extended hours if required;

• Outstanding writing and editing skills; ability to turn technical information into compelling stories;

• Ability to deliver top quality content fast, under pressure and within tight deadlines;

• Strong multi-tasker, able to deliver multiple priorities at once;

• Confidence in interacting with journalists, scientists, external partners, and in representing IUCN;

• Fast and dynamic but rigorous when it comes to the quality and accuracy of outputs;

• Willingness to travel within the region, sometimes at short notice;

• Fluency in English; knowledge of other language spoken in the region is an asset;

• Strong IT and technical skills.
