BACKGROUND
JOB DESCRIPTION
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

• Support the implementation of the IUCN's Programme in Eastern Europe, North and Central Asia with particular emphasis on the protected areas thematic priority
• Contribute to the IUCN ECARO Conservation Programme project portfolio through development, implementation and monitoring of projects and communication with regional partners and donors, with special focus on activities aiming at achieving biodiversity and social outcomes of protected areas in relation to national and international targets
• Maintain and develop partnerships with project partners and beneficiaries

SPECIFIC DUTIES

• Coordinate or contribute to activities and projects under the Conservation Programme of IUCN ECARO in all phases of project management life cycle aiming at improved performance of protected and conserved areas through capacity building and application of standards and tools for protected area governance and management (e.g. the IUCN Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas, and World Heritage Outlook)
• Assist in documenting best practices in achieving protected area quality
• Assist in the development of strategic recommendations concerning the conservation of biodiversity through effectively and equitably managed, ecologically representative and well-connected systems of protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures in Eastern Europe, North and Central Asia
• Assist in collecting and analysing information for project proposal development and funding opportunities with respect to the protected areas thematic programme in Eastern Europe, North and Central Asia
• Contribute to and monitor the implementation and management of service contracts under the IUCN ECARO Conservation Programme projects while ensuring that all donor-related and IUCN administrative requirements and protocols are observed
• Collaborate with relevant staff on IUCN ECARO communication products: including writing, editing and helping with web stories, fact sheets, publications and other media requests
• Represent IUCN ECARO at major conferences and meetings relevant for protected areas related projects
• Support IUCN ECARO day-to-day operations, including logistical services and organization of meetings and events

The above list contains the main duties and responsibilities for this position. IUCN ECARO staff members are expected to show flexibility and be willing to undertake other tasks that are reasonably allocated to them but which are not part of their regular job description.

SALARY

The gross annual salary for this position is in the range of 24.960 EUR to EUR 27.504 subject to deductions for social security contributions and health insurance, and before tax.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) in a subject related to nature conservation and environmental management

• At least 3 years of experience in a relevant position

• Experience in the management of technical programmes and projects, including all phases of project design, implementation, financial, monitoring and evaluation, and technical reporting

• Proven knowledge of, and experience in relevant global and regional nature conservation and environmental management policies, with specific emphasis on protected areas

• Proven leadership skills, ability to work under pressure and within multi-national environment and different cultures

• Ability to manage institutional relationships and support multi-stakeholder initiatives

• Excellent command of written and spoken English is essential. Knowledge of Russian or other languages spoken in Eastern Europe and Central Asia is an asset

• Ability to cope with varied workload and flexible working hours

• Willingness to travel within the region, sometimes at short notice

• Full computer literacy
