BACKGROUND
THIS IS A LOCAL POSITION OPEN TO SOUTH AFRICAN NATIONALS OR PERMANENT RESIDENCE OF SOUTH AFRICA.

TRAFFIC, the wildlife trade monitoring network, works to ensure that trade in wild animals and plants is not a threat to the conservation of nature. We actively monitor and investigate wildlife trade and provide information to diverse audiences worldwide as a basis for effective conservation policies and programmes. TRAFFIC is a strategic alliance of World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and is an international network, organised into six regional programmes.

Leads delivery of key TRAFFIC communications outputs, with a particular emphasis on development of communications approaches and content to enhance and extend the organization’s reach to a wider cross-section of target audiences.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Specific Duties

Profile
• Writes and produces materials for use by TRAFFIC and partners to increase awareness of TRAFFIC’s work and wildlife trade issues more generally, including briefing papers and annual reports.
• Develops tailored tools and approaches to strengthen communications outreach to key constituencies.
• Designs and produces materials of a visual nature, including infographics and video content, to strengthen the reach and impact of TRAFFIC’s work
• Promotes TRAFFIC’s work within IUCN and WWF networks and within other collaborative partnerships of TRAFFIC through relevant outputs e.g. partner-focused events, electronic newsletters.
• Enhances TRAFFIC’s presence and accessibility via digital media channels including assistance with updating the TRAFFIC network website, www.traffic.org

Programme interface
• Under guidance from relevant TRAFFIC experts, develops public messaging emanating from outputs relating to TRAFFIC’s Conservation Programme,

Delivery
• Oversees and develops TRAFFIC’s presence on social media channels (Twitter and Facebook).
• Acts as one of the primary contact points with media and freelance journalists.
• Act as a primary contact for those in the science and research community, governments and others seeking information about wildlife trade issues.
• Assists with copy-editing, language review and production of TRAFFICs products as directed.
• Carries out systematic monitoring and evaluation of the effectiveness of TRAFFIC’s communications outputs.

Partnership
• Maintains close collaboration and dialogue with the communications focal points of WWF and IUCN.
• Co-ordinates the use of TRAFFIC network communications materials and initiatives via the WWF and IUCN global communications channels, including their respective websites, newsletters, e-bulletins, media office.
• Maintains close collaboration and dialogue with the communications focal points of other collaborative partnerships of TRAFFIC.

Fundraising
• Supports TRAFFIC’s fundraising through assisting with the design and production of fundraising proposals and donor reports.
REQUIREMENTS
  • A degree in media studies or similar communications discipline.

• Professional experience in the communications field and managing communications projects.

• Fluency in English and, preferably, a working knowledge of Chinese, French, or Portuguese

• Strong computer literacy skills, including with electronic publishing (e.g. InDesign) and design and social media channels

• A high level of organizational skills and attention to detail

• Strong writing skills, including copy writing for a non-technical audience

• An ability to work co-operatively with others, both in an office situation and with staff and partners working remotely.
