BACKGROUND
The role will provide GIS support to staff in the Red List Unit throughout the process of updating and releasing the IUCN Red List, and will provide general support to other GIS work in the Red List and Global Species Programme Units. This role is also responsible for maintaining the geospatial elements behind the Red List to the required standards.

The salary for this role is £23,500 - £27,500p.a. dependent on skills and experience

We are looking for a keen GIS enthusiast, who feels comfortable in a flexible environment with respect to technologies and variety of projects, and is keen to explore innovative and efficient solutions for the betterment of the Red List systems and workflows.


You will form part of a keen small but growing team who is responsible for looking after the Red List data, manage and deliver products and tools for improving the collection of this data, it’s storage, maintenance, validation. You will also be the first port of contact for any GIS related matters pertaining mostly to the Red List.

You will be a highly motivated and focused individual, who is aware of the importance of data provision and information, and can build good inter-working relationships with others in the team, and is passionate about the main goals of IUCN and the Global Species programme.

You would be expected to deliver high quality work, under minimal supervision, and are comfortable working in fast paced changing environments and managing workloads across multiple requests and projects. You will be someone who likes to experiment with new technology and propose solutions proactively where it contributes positively to the team and the impact of the work we do.

We expect you to be familiar with ESRI software, including the latest versions of ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Server, and ArcGIS Online, as well as open-source geospatial technologies like Quantum GIS, PostgreSQL/PostGIS, Geoserver, geospatial python scripting and related tools.
JOB DESCRIPTION
• Maintain,manage, and integrate new datasets into the Red List spatial database (polygons and points), ensuring it is updated, and validated properly, meets the required standards and uses best processes, with help of the line manager.

• Provide GIS technical input to the Red List Unit and other units within the Global Species Programme with emphasis on the Red List updates.

• Coordinate and assist in the collation, organization, processing and analysis of the spatial data for various assessment projects coordinated by other units within the IUCN Global species programme or by the IUCN regional Offices.

• Responsible for making the Red List spatial data available online, in the right formats, including the Red List website, downloads and other related projects for the Red List.

• Provide GIS technical support via design, development and maintenance of GIS tools and scripts to manage data more efficiently, improving workflows, supporting mapping documentation and training materials, in collaboration with Line Manager.

• Provide general GIS support and analyses where needed and be first line support for Red List GIS and data-related queries.


• Support the line manager on broader GIS related matters, including other IUCN knowledge products.

• Provide support on other technical non-GIS related work, under the line manager’s supervision, where appropriate.

• Collaborate with the Global IS Group / GIS Coordination team on various matters, where appropriate
REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be eligible to live and work in the UK

• Education
Bachelors or masters or equivalent work experience in GIS, geography, computer science, information systems, engineering, environmental science or a related field.

Work Experience
• Experience in the ESRI suite of software particularly working knowledge of ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Server, ArcView, or other ESRI software products.
• Experience working with open-source geospatial systems/technologies such as PostgreSQL/PostGIS , Quantum GIS and GeoServer.

Skills
Requirements:
• Working knowledge and experience with ESRI geodatabase schema and behaviour. An understanding of relational databases, SQL and ArcSDE is also required.
• Familiarity with ArcGIS Desktop extensions (e.g. ArcGIS Spatial Analyst, VBA)
• Familiarity with Quantum GIS and extensions.
• Knowledge of GIS relational databases e.g. PostGIS/PostgreSQL, MsSQL
• Working knowledge of Python as a scripting language.
Desirable
• Knowledge of ArcObjects is desired but not essential.
• Exposure to R, and VBA programming languages
• Experience of FME tool

Competencies/Behaviours
A keen interest in the natural world and biodiversity conservation would be a distinct advantage, but is not essential.
