BACKGROUND
JOB DESCRIPTION
RESPONSIBILITY

Under the direct supervision of the manager of protected areas and biodiversity Programme, this position is responsible for reporting and coordinating PAN project. This position will be responsible for engagement and ensuring good relations with the implementation partners.The position entails regular interactions with peers from regional partners, national administrations, and regional organisations on complex issues.


SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The project Coordinator is responsible for ensuring the effective and efficient implementation of PAN project: “Initial Steps for the Establishment of the National Protected Areas Network” More specifically:

• Project implementation: The post holder will 1) be responsible for the coordination of the project component of PAN project according to the Internal Agreement between IUCN-ROWA and the UN environment , and in full compliance with the donor contract and all associated procedures, guidelines and standards; Specific tasks include :

• Ensure the implementation of the project activities in accordance with the project documents, agreed work plans and IUCN procedures.

• Follow up the yearly work plans to provide support to the ministry of environment in Iraq in the following:
- Coordinate with experts to deliver the required studies and analysis.
- Coordinate with UN environment for the needed reports.
- Coordinate the field work of the project to deliver the required design and develop the network of protected areas in Iraq.

• Ensure that IUCN knowledge products and tools are provided to IUCN ROWA communication officer as needed, with the required support, in collaboration with UN environment and the ministry of environment in Iraq.

• Ensure that the project’s achievements are efficiently communicated to partners and to the conservation community.

• Work closely with the programme manager to secure and sustain Funds for the PA programme. Specifically, he/she will:

• Ensure appropriate alignment of joint IUCN ROWA regional activities.

• Work closely with the PAs programme manager to identify gaps emerging from the implementation of IUCN strategy in west Asia region;

• Work closely with the PAs manager to secure funds to address management and governance for PAs in West Asia region.

• Represent effectively the IUCN and its partners in the region events:

• Assist with maintaining strong relationships with relevant IUCN partners, maintaining communications, efficient collaboration and a spirit of service to the project’s beneficiaries.

• Ensure projects compliance with the donors’ and IUCN’s procedures.

• Update the project portal regularly with the project and the programme projects information.

• Performing any other duties as requested by the line manager.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Minimum of university degree and post-graduate (M.Sc.) academic studies
is an advantage, preferentially higher degree of specialized academic
studies in natural resource management, ecology - related discipline


• At least 3 years’ experience with project and program responsibility

• Demonstrated expertise and experience with protected area management,
and specifically within ROWA region


• Strong communication and presentation skills and an ability to prepare
appropriate and timely reports to a wide range of audiences and cultures


• Extensive and practical knowledge of main environmental agreements and
environmental policies.


• Time management skills including an ability to work effectively under
pressure and to meet deadlines.


• Awareness and an ability to acknowledge and respect different cultures,
and to engage appropriately with people of different backgrounds


• Fluent writing and speaking literacy in both English and Arabic.

• Extensive experience with protected area management systems, particularly
management effectiveness


• Experience in biodiversity and/or protected areas information management,
ideally involving terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems, at
national and/or regional levels
