Project Specialist - Behavioural Change

TRAFFIC International is a charity and limited company registered in the UK. TRAFFIC’s head office, based in Cambridge UK, provides worldwide leadership, coordination, cross-regional and corporate functions. TRAFFIC’s local engagement is managed through programme offices operating under the auspices of the UK charity, with staff based in a hub office and at other strategic locations where necessary. Programme offices operate within a geographic area of responsibility focused on one or multiple countries where TRAFFIC aims to help deliver priority programme outcomes. TRAFFIC works in strategic alliance with IUCN and WWF on wildlife trade issues.
Human behaviour is a central factor facilitating and driving wildlife trade. TRAFFIC has a suite of projects applying best practice in behavioural science to combat wildlife trafficking and mitigate the markets for illegally sourced wildlife products in Asia. This role will act as a front-line reviewer and manager for each of these projects, with associated responsibilities of providing technical input and ensuring timely delivery of activities, outputs and outcomes with target audiences in China, Thailand and Viet Nam. The post will liaise closely with TRAFFIC’s Behavioural Change Coordinator.
SPECIFIC DUTIES
• Providing first line review, advice, guidance and input to national teams implementing behaviour change projects reducing the demand for illegally sourced wildlife products. These will include rhino horn, elephant ivory, pangolin and Tiger products, in China, Thailand and Viet Nam
• Helping to ensure statistical rigour and the technical integrity of consumer research insight produced primarily by third parties; including reviewing and advising on sampling methodologies and survey structure, as well as question framing and subsequent raw data analysis
• Providing broader guidance to support implementation teams design high-impact, cost-effective and innovative messaging, drawing from best practice in social and behavioural sciences
• Advising on the development of draft consumer archetypes, pen portraits, psycho-demographic profiles, attitudinal segmentation and ‘demand reduction’ communication plans
• Providing quality assurance that project activities are being delivered on time and on budget
• Ensuring learning is shared with the SBCC Community of Practice by liaising with the SBCC Programme Officer based in Thailand to ensure the transfer of experience and insight
• Broader support to programme development with TRAFFIC’s work on behavioural change.

• Degree level qualification in a relevant discipline • Experience of applying behaviour change approaches; either in conservation or another industry • Experience of working in an Asian context with a good understanding of cultural differences • Project Management experience with multi-year projects incl. GAA donors • Strong communicator, must be fluent in English, with excellent written and spoken communication skills. Additional language skills an advantage. • A strong team player who is able to work able to work on own initiatives and be a self-directed lateral thinker. |
