BACKGROUND
Since 2008, IUCN has been leading the development, implementation and monitoring of a global standard for the assessment of ecosystem status, applicable at local, regional and global levels. The IUCN Red List of Ecosystems categories and criteria use information on losses in area and degradation of the key processes and components of ecosystems, to determine an ecosystem’s threat status – its probability of collapse. A standardized protocol allows for objective, transparent and repeatable assessments of ecosystem risk, and losses of ecosystem functions and services, comparable between regions and over time.

IUCN’s work on Nature based Solutions (NbS) has rapidly evolved from implementation of policy and practice work, across the globe. NbS involves using ecosystem management (conservation, restoration and sustainable use) for solving a societal challenge (such as climate change adaptation, green economy development and human wellbeing). IUCN is currently in the process of further defining NbS through case study analysis, including development and adoption of NbS standards. IUCN also regularly convenes internal and external awareness raising activities to strengthen the understanding, ownership and partnerships in bringing NbS to scale. Furthermore, IUCN is conducting research and pilots on how RLE can be used as a monitoring tool for implementation of NbS.
