BACKGROUND
The Congress Webmaster will manage web pages for IUCN’s highest profile event – the IUCN World Conservation Congress. Every four years, the IUCN Congress brings world leaders and decision makers from governments, civil society, indigenous peoples’ organisations and business together with leading scientists and thousands of experts to debate and act on the latest in nature conservation and sustainable development.
The incumbent will work with external contractors, partners, and communicators across the Union to create, update and maintain web pages and digital content on the IUCN Congress website in three languages before, during and after the event. The position requires a mix of design and technical talent, including the ability to create well-presented web pages targeted to a wide range of audiences and demands, to fix minor to medium scale technical issues, and to prioritise strategic demands and day-to-day activities under tight deadlines.
The officer will report to the Communications Manager in the Global Communications Unit with a functional reporting to the Congress Manager, Union Development Group, and he/she will work closely with members of the Global Communications Team, the Congress Unit, the Global Information Systems Group and counterparts from the Host Country to implement all communications efforts related with the Congress website.
This is a big job and an excellent opportunity for a competent, hard-working webmaster to showcase his or her skills with a highly visible, complex, international website. The position requires someone who can see the big picture and set priorities accordingly and who is willing and capable of doing what it takes to get the job done, from rapid-fire bug fixes to improving content presentation to liaising with various stakeholders. The position will require someone who is well organised, can work independently and make proactive suggestions within broad guidelines, and who can maintain composure, efficiency and professional courtesy in stressful situations.

During the Members’ Assembly, IUCN’s 1,300+ Member organisations collectively decide on actions to address the most pressing and often controversial conservation and sustainable development challenges. IUCN’s membership includes some of the most influential government and civil society organisations from more than 160 countries, giving the decisions taken at the IUCN Congress a powerful mandate.
The next Congress will take place in Marseille, France from 11 to 19 June 2020.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Detailed responsibilities of the Congress Webmaster are as follows:
• Publish and optimize web content and images prepared by the Global Communications Unit, The Congress Unit, or other IUCN units as required.
• Maintain pages with content provided by IUCN Congress and communications teams including deadlines, logistics, substantive and marketing information for IUCN Members, event organisers, Congress participants and external target audiences including the media. This requires a full understanding of internal and external Congress deadlines and IUCN policies and includes managing content providers, consultants, translators in order to update key pages within the required time frame.
• Assigning roles to specific users
• Creating banners and/or buttons to direct traffic to specific pages (motions list, sessions calendar, etc).
• Provide recommendations and solutions for efficient and user-friendly ways to present information on the Congress website
• Debug pages, fix broken links or images and optimize loading speeds as needed.
• Ensure visual identity, global communications standards and website management best practices (e.g. regarding pages, assets, structure / taxonomies, SEO, optimization for social media activities, etc…) are respected across the Congress website.
• Create regular email newsletters in all three languages using the CiviCRM platform, the Congress email html template and content provided by the IUCN Congress and communications teams.
• Act as liaison between the Global Communications Team, the IUCN Global Information Services Group and the Drupal Technical Consultants in issues related with technical needs in terms of the Congress website administration and the development of new features. This includes assisting with necessary transformations to the website structure before, during and after the Congress.
• Work with the Global Communications Team, the Congress Unit, the Host Country communications representative(s), IUCN programmes, regional offices and other focal points regarding the Congress website. This include providing support to edit pages and maintaining a coherent structure to the Congress website with the addition of new pages.
• Help in the design of simple graphic elements, buttons or page layouts for the website or other audio-visual communications material for use on the 2024 Congress website.
• Track and report KPIs and other relevant page performance statistics using Google Analytics.
• Prepare final “lessons learnt” with key recommendations on efforts deployed and results achieved on the Congress website and help prepare internal reporting
• Participate onsite / remotely in the Congress in Marseille, France from 9 to 21 June 2020 and assist the Global Communications Unit team across a wide variety of communications activities as required throughout duration of the contract.
REQUIREMENTS
  • English: excellent working skills required. French and/or Spanish considered assets

• Degree in communications, technology, international relations or related discipline preferred

• At least 3 years’ experience in a similar role with hands-on experience regarding website management

• Experience with Drupal or similar content management system required

• Experience with tracking and analysing website performance with Google Analytics

• Advanced knowledge of HTML required

• Some understanding of JavaScript, CSS, Ajax, PHP, XML desirable

• Image, video, infographic editing skills considered assets

• Able to work effectively with a variety of teams and respectfully in a multi-cultural work environment

• Pro-active, dynamic, autonomous and results-focused

• Able to react quickly and efficiently to sudden changes and/or challenges

• Able to work outside of normal working hours, as required

• Flexible and willing to take on a wide variety of responsibilities, including administrative tasks

• Able to assist onsite/remotely with extended hours for the Congress in Marseille, France from 9 to 21 June 2020

• Open-minded and positive, with a good sense of humour
