Species Programme Intern
|
The mission of the IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation (IUCN-Med) is to influence, encourage and assist Mediterranean societies in achieving both the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources, and sustainable development.
With a strong focus on biodiversity, nature conservation, protected areas and ecosystem services, IUCN-Med provides valuable input into ongoing policy debates in these areas, as well as a broad platform for discussions thanks to its varied membership.
This assignment will include the following responsibilities:
• Assist in the daily activities of the Mediterranean Species Programme, including collection and analysis of data and information on Mediterranean biodiversity, and assist in the development of projects including the writing of reports, factsheets and other communication material;
• Support the work on assessing the IUCN Red List of Species undergoing
• Prepare digital distribution maps using GIS tools based on published and unpublished information and correspondence with experts
• Collate, synthesize and analyse new published and unpublished information on status,
• distribution and threats to each species under evaluation
• Update data fields and text accounts in the IUCN Species Information Service (SIS) online database
• Contact experts and reviewers to update and check this information, and incorporating such updates
• Provide support for the organisation of workshops and meetings upon request;
• Provide a range of administrative support functions on a day-to-day basis (e.g. distribution lists, consultancy contracts, etc.).
This internship provides a challenging and interesting opportunity to work in a dynamic international organisation and to gain work experience in the field of nature conservation policies and projects. For this internship there is no financial remuneration but a daily allowance for meals as well as a contribution to cover transportation can be provided.
Preferred starting date of the internship is 17 June 2019.
This position as a gross internship allowance of 550 € per month.

• Candidates must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate university programme and not have graduated from it. Candidates who have graduated from university are not eligible. A degree in a relevant biological or environmental subject. • Good understanding of IUCN Red List categories, criteria and application. • Excellent English writing skills in a scientific style • Experience of collating, verifying, analysing, interpreting and disseminating biological data (e.g. publications and reports). • Highly proficient in English (native speaker or equivalent). Other languages beneficial, but not essential. • Good GIS skills (preferably ArcGIS) and experience handling and analysing big databases in Excel. • Excellent attention to detail, with the ability to undertake repetitive tasks accurately and consistently. • Proficient in Microsoft Office (especially Outlook, Word and Excel). • Good organizational, administrative and reporting skills. Strong written and oral communication skills. Ability to work independently and on multiple tasks simultaneously. Ability to meet tight deadlines without compromising the quality of outputs. Highly motivated to learn and develop new skills. A team player with a strong interest to work in an international environment |
