BACKGROUND
TRAFFIC is the leading non-governmental organization working globally on trade in wild animals and plants in the context of both biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.

TRAFFIC International is a charity and limited company registered in the UK. TRAFFIC’s head office, based in Cambridge UK, provides worldwide leadership, coordination, cross-regional and corporate functions. TRAFFIC’s local engagement is managed through programme offices operating under the auspices of the UK charity, with staff based in a hub office and at other strategic locations where necessary. Programme offices operate within a geographic area of responsibility focused on one or multiple countries where TRAFFIC aims to help deliver priority programme outcomes. TRAFFIC works in strategic alliance with IUCN and WWF on wildlife trade issues.


The salary for this role will be £35,000 - £40,000p.a. dependent on skills and experience.
JOB DESCRIPTION
• Oversee data collection, input and analysis across the international network. Lead on carrying out routine audits and gap assessments to improve targeting of further data collection efforts and identify new sources of information.
• Lead on the compilation of existing data on wildlife trade dynamics as required, including market surveys, seizures, arrests, convictions, and any other information concerning the legal, illegal and unsustainable wildlife trade and conduct additional research to ensure the correct referencing of data. Data will need to be entered in a scientific format for ease of analysis and according to the standard operating procedures that TRAFFIC uses. Ensure that, where possible, all information is accurately geocoded to enable mapping of the wildlife trade at a later stage.
• To develop formal partnerships with conservation partners through the establishment of information sharing agreements to improve the collection of data relevant to understanding wildlife trade dynamics.
• Drive research and analysis of wildlife trade for relevant policy fora in close collaboration with project managers, produce assessments and routine brief typology reports outlining modus operandi of specific crime cases, as well as alerts summarising useful information for law enforcement action and information reports that will help determine and guide future priorities for combating illegal and unsustainable wildlife trade. Analyse data and prepare reports for conservation practitioners, private sector partners and government authorities responsible for wildlife trade regulation and conservation action. Attend meetings and workshops and present on data analysis results and methodologies, as required.
• Work closely with TRAFFIC’s database manager to monitor and review the input of data by staff, interns and volunteers. Provide training and guidance to TRAFFIC staff on data collection, analysis and use of WiTIS database.
• Develop formal and informal partnerships with conservation partners and other sector specific partners in the areas of finance, transportation and law enforcement to improve the collection of data relevant to understanding wildlife trade dynamics. Play an active role in negotiating and managing data-sharing agreements with partner organisations, government entities, civil society organisations and NGOs in conjunction with project leaders, and other TRAFFIC staff. An ability to quickly develop and leverage working relationships with TRAFFIC staff is key to fulfilling the requirements of this role.
• Raise awareness, in close collaboration with the TRAFFIC communications team, of the extent and impacts of wildlife crime on the conservation of threatened species with key partners, stakeholders and community audiences. Assist with the production of articles for publication in the TRAFFIC Bulletin on the trends and implications of illegal and unstainable wildlife trade.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Full Requirements / Expectations of the Role holder
• Must be eligible to live and work in the United Kingdom.
• A university degree or postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. data-analysis and/or applied statistics, criminology, biology, law, financial intelligence, economics or another relevant social science).
• Minimum of three years’ experience with the collection and collation of scientific data and data analysis;
• Experience of database software (ideally IBM’s i2 software). Experience with compilation and analysis of data in Excel and with GIS software. Experience with statistical analysis is an advantage.
• An eye for detail and a keen interest and ability to recognise connections between data;
• Good interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively as part of a diverse team as well as independently, with respect for and sensitivity to multi-cultural approaches.
• Ability to work independently and under pressure and to set own work priorities as appropriate and a capacity to meet deadlines.
• Familiarity with and an interest in conservation, particularly wildlife trade issues.
• Fluency in English with excellent English writing skills. Working knowledge of French and any other languages an advantage.
• Independent thinker able to show initiative in developing innovative approaches.
• Willingness to travel overseas, as required.
• Experience developing typology reports and other information or briefing reports, an advantage.
