BACKGROUND
IUCN’s Global Protected Areas Programme (GPAP) is expanding its work on marine protected areas (MPAs) knowledge sharing and capacity building through a number of new projects, in particular an extension of the Blue Solutions project collaboration.
Blue Solutions is a global project funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) under its International Climate Initiative (IKI). It is jointly implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) as the lead with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), GRID-Arendal, and the United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment). The project focuses on developing and setting up a global platform for exchanging and disseminating knowledge on how to sustainably use marine and coastal biodiversity and on capacity development among key political and technical stakeholders in this field. The recent two-year extension of the project until September 2021 is designed to support implementation in selected target countries and regions, while consolidating the global partnership and strengthening the link to key global policy processes.
Blue Solutions builds on the broader multi-thematic, multi-partner knowledge and learning initiative PANORAMA – Solutions for a Healthy Planet, which aims to identify and promote successful approaches (solutions) in conservation and sustainable development. IUCN GPAP provides an overall secretariat function for PANORAMA, jointly with GIZ. IUCN GPAP is also actively involved in PANORAMA’s “marine and coastal” and “protected areas” thematic communities.
