One key area of work of IUCN’s Global Protected Areas Programme (GPAP) is on “solutions”, i.e. knowledge sharing and capacity building on successful approaches in nature conservation. The vehicle for this work is the multi-thematic, multi-partner learning initiative PANORAMA – Solutions for a Healthy Planet. PANORAMA identifies, documents and promotes successful approaches – solutions – to conservation and sustainable development challenges from a wide range of “solution providers”, including NGO, government, international organizations and academia.

PANORAMA is structured into five thematic communities, with more upcoming: Protected areas, Marine and coastal, Ecosystem-based adaptation, Agriculture and biodiversity as well as Business engagement. IUCN GPAP, together with UNDP, coordinates the Protected areas thematic community.

IUCN GPAP and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) together constitute the PANORAMA partnership secretariat, providing overall coordination and day-to-day management for the initiative. The functions of the secretariat currently include: advancing extension of the PANORAMA partnership internally and externally, developing strategic collaborations, onboarding of new partners, oversight of the web platform, support to the Steering Group and thematic community coordinators, organization of meetings and calls, preparation of governance documents, external communications and coordination of PANORAMA event participation.

This position includes a diverse set of tasks and responsibilities:
New dedicated funding has been committed to strengthen the PANORAMA secretariat and in turn ensure a stable and strategic coordination of the growing and developing initiative. This enables the creation of a PANORAMA Secretariat officer position housed at IUCN GPAP. GIZ will sustain its engagement in the Secretariat as well, with GRID-Arendal and UNDP getting involved in supporting functions. Other projects across GPAP’s portfolio are foreseen to sustain this position in the medium term as an integral component of the GPAP team and the PANORAMA partnership.

The incumbent will play a central role in strengthening and advancing the initiative, liaising with PANORAMA’s wide, global and diverse community of partners, solution contributors, reviewers and collaborators, with extensive exposure and contact to contacts within and outside IUCN.

Support the PANORAMA partnership, in close cooperation with GIZ, GRID-Arendal, UNDP and other PANORAMA partners, in particular:

o Internal partnership coordination: Ensure effective and efficient coordination of the PANORAMA partnership (7 organizations including IUCN), including organization of Steering Group and Technical Exchange Group meetings and calls, coordination of consultation processes within the partnership, drafting and maintenance of governance documents.
o Supervision of web development and administration: Lead administration of, and play a key role in further development of the PANORAMA web platform, including coordination of development of new functionalities, hosting, maintenance and technical support, as well as solicitation and evaluation of feedback from users and thematic communities.
o Community management: Manage the PANORAMA wide volunteer reviewer network, including recruitment and training of reviewers, improvement of training and guidance materials, creation of an incentives programme for reviewers.
o Impact monitoring in relation to solution uptake: Support development of methodological approaches to monitor the impact of PANORAMA through solution application /scaling on the ground, and to capture and demonstrate the value and cumulative contribution (impact) of PANORAMA solutions for achieving global policy targets.
o Solution analysis and global policy: Support analysis of solutions and development of messages for UN frameworks for biodiversity (post 2020), climate change (Paris Agreement) and sustainable development (Agenda 2030).
o Events and outreach: Support presentation of PANORAMA at relevant international events (e.g. UN Secretary General’s “UN Nature Summit” during the General Assembly week in 2020, CBD and UNFCCC COPs, IUCN World Conservation Congress, …)
o New partnerships: Support development and accompanying of new strategic partnerships with relevant like-minded institutions, networks, platforms and initiatives.
o Contest: Support for the 2021 Pathfinder Award scheme.
