BACKGROUND
TRAFFIC is the leading non-governmental organization working globally on trade in wild animals and plants in the context of both biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.

TRAFFIC International is a charity and limited company registered in the UK. TRAFFIC’s head office, based in Cambridge UK, provides worldwide leadership, coordination, cross-regional and corporate functions. TRAFFIC’s local engagement is managed through programme offices operating under the auspices of the UK charity, with staff based in a hub office and at other strategic locations where necessary. Programme offices operate within a geographic area of responsibility focused on one or multiple countries where TRAFFIC aims to help deliver priority programme outcomes. TRAFFIC works in strategic alliance with IUCN and WWF on wildlife trade issues.

Salary range is £27,800 – 34,900 p.a based on experience
JOB DESCRIPTION
Specific Duties

Profile
• Manages the day-to-day international media enquiries TRAFFIC receives by collaborating with key spokespeople within the organisation and consulting and or developing appropriate position statements in order to respond in a timely fashion.
• Supports TRAFFIC’s efforts to elevate the issues of illegal and legal wildlife trade in the public view by developing and distributing press releases and engaging media kits.
• Empowers TRAFFIC spokespeople to confidently talk to media about their area of expertise by supporting the development of their messages, interview preparation and delivering media training.
• Reviews news coverage and provides regular reports on media coverage from TRAFFIC’s media monitoring service Meltwater.
• Works with the Head of Communications and the wider team to identify opportunities and develop the organisation's brand.
• Works closely with members of the policy, influence and analysis teams to translate technical conclusions into digestible and impactful positions and/or statements.
• Writes engaging content that supports the communications team to deliver impactful communications across other channels as necessary.


Programme interface
• Under guidance from relevant TRAFFIC experts, develops public messaging emanating from outputs relating to TRAFFIC’s Conservation Programme.

Delivery
• Acts as the primary contact point with media.
• Act as a primary contact for those in the science and research community, governments and others seeking information about wildlife trade issues.
• Advises on appropriate media outreach for both TRAFFIC’s core communication strategy and for individual projects as required.
• Identifies, co-ordinates, and develops targeted content to support TRAFFIC’s profile and Conservation Programme objectives.

Partnership
• Develops and nurtures relationships with key media stakeholders.
• Maintains close collaboration and dialogue with the communications focal points of WWF and IUCN.
• Maintains close collaboration and dialogue with the communications focal points of other collaborative partnerships of TRAFFIC.
REQUIREMENTS
  • • Professional experience in the communications field and managing communications projects.
• A degree in media studies or similar communications discipline.
• A high level of organisational skills and attention to detail.
• Strong writing skills, including copy writing for a non-technical audience.
• Strong computer literacy skills, including with electronic publishing, design and social media channels.
• Familiarity handling media monitoring services and creating coverage reports.
• An ability to work co-operatively with others, both in an office situation and with staff and partners working remotely.
• Experience of crisis management and handling difficult media questions.
• Fluency in English and, preferably, a working knowledge of Chinese, French, German, or Spanish.
