The Convention on Wetlands is an intergovernmental treaty that provides the framework for national action and international cooperation for the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands and of wetland biodiversity and services. It is the first of the modern global multilateral environmental agreements and remains the only one devoted to a specific critical ecosystem.

The Convention Secretariat has its headquarters in Gland, Switzerland, where the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) provides some administrative services for the Convention.

The Secretariat of the Convention on Wetlands has its headquarters in Gland, Switzerland where the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), provides some administrative services to the Convention’s Secretariat for the operations and implementation of the Convention.

The Secretariat provides technical and policy advice to the Contracting Parties to the Convention in the implementation of the Strategic Plan 2016-2024. The Insular Caribbean is one of the most vulnerable regions in the world with respect to exposure to the effects of climate change and to natural hazards. To support Contracting Parties to improve the conservation and wise use of Caribbean wetlands the project “Wise Use of Caribbean Wetlands for Climate Change Mitigation and Conservation of their Ecosystem Services” will be implemented to strengthen Caribbean countries’ resilience and adaptability to climate change. The project involves the assessment of ecosystem services and the vulnerability of Ramsar Sites to climate change and their subsequent monitoring and capacity building of all major stakeholders on the values of coastal wetlands.

Under the supervision of the project coordinator, the technical officer will support the components on climate change, ecosystem services and the effectiveness of management of Ramsar Sites.

The technical officer will ensure compliance with project commitments, supporting the delivery of quality reports and compliance with performance indicators on the components of climate change, ecosystem services and the effectiveness of management of Ramsar Sites.

Scope of responsibilities

1. Provide technical support on the components of climate change, ecosystem services and the effectiveness of management of Ramsar Sites of the project according to the Convention guidelines and the outcomes of the climate change and ecosystem services consultancies.

2. Provide technical support on the implementation of integrated coastal zone management and maritime spatial planning and monitoring programme of Ramsar Sites.

3. Provide technical support on the organization of national and international workshops of the project on climate change, ecosystem services, integrated coastal zone management and the effectiveness of management of Ramsar Sites.

4. Provide technical support on side events in global forums according to the events schedule of the project.

5. Work with the governments in the participating countries in the implementation of integrated coastal zone management and maritime spatial planning and monitoring programme of Ramsar Sites.

6. Observe project management procedures/techniques in order to facilitate project implementation and ensure delivery of high quality outcomes in the component of the effectiveness of management, integrated coastal zone management and maritime spatial planning and monitoring programme of Ramsar Sites.

7. Lead the preparation of dissemination materials (flyers, booklets and reports) on the component on the effectiveness of management, integrated coastal zone management and maritime spatial planning and monitoring programme of Ramsar Sites, according to the outputs and outcomes of the project.

8. Provide technical support to the design and development of knowledge products related to the effectiveness of management, integrated coastal zone management and maritime spatial planning and monitoring programme of Ramsar Sites.

9. Produce project technical progress reports in English and Spanish according to the outputs and the time frames of reporting on the component of effectiveness of management, integrated coastal zone management and maritime spatial planning and monitoring programme of Ramsar Sites.

10. Report regularly to the supervisor on the progress of the implementation of the component of effectiveness of management, integrated coastal zone management and maritime spatial planning and monitoring programme of Ramsar Sites.

11. Carry out other duties as required by the supervisor
