BACKGROUND
TRAFFIC, a UK-registered charity based in Cambridge, works to ensure that trade in wild animals and plants is not a threat to the conservation of nature, and is managed in a way that helps meet human needs. Our work ranges from investigating and supporting crackdowns on illegal trade in ivory, rhino horn and other endangered species products to supporting fair and sustainable trade in the herbal products sector.

We are looking for an experienced, dynamic and inspiring individual who can strengthen marketing of our programme to prospective donors and grow the funding base underpinning our work. This newly created post provides a great opportunity for the right person to shape and spearhead delivery of an ambitious effort to successfully market TRAFFIC’s work to foundations, trusts, corporate and individual donors.

The role involves working as part of a friendly team in TRAFFIC’s Cambridge headquarters and with colleagues based in our international network of seven regional offices on five continents. The position is available from 1 December 2014.

The salary range for this position is £35,000 - £38,000 per annum dependent on skills and experience
JOB DESCRIPTION
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES

• Refine and lead delivery of TRAFFIC’s strategy to increase investment in TRAFFIC’s work.

• Develop and produce high quality fundraising and marketing materials for current and potential donors in collaboration with TRAFFIC’s Communications Team and programme staff.

• Identify and cultivate funding relationships with foundations, trusts, corporate and individual donors who share TRAFFIC’s mission and are in a position to help drive it forward.

• Liaise with staff in TRAFFIC offices around the world and within partner organizations WWF and IUCN to coordinate and strengthen global fundraising and associated marketing approaches.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

• Refine and lead the roll out of TRAFFIC’s strategy to diversify and grow sources of unrestricted funding, with the aim of increasing unrestricted income by £150,000 or more in the first year.
• Prepare inspirational copy and advise on the design of printed, online and video materials to market TRAFFIC to potential donors (e.g. cases for support, annual report, supporter newsletters, presentations).
• Identify and cultivate new funding prospects (particularly foundations, trusts, and high net worth individuals), including through face-to-face meetings and preparation of funding proposals.
• Maintain and where possible strengthen relationships with current and recently lapsed donors.
• Advise TRAFFIC staff on designing and delivering fundraising approaches and associated relationship management; coordinate approaches as necessary.
• Establish and motivate staff to contribute to a common TRAFFIC marketing resource kit e.g. factfiles, story banks, photos, video clips.
• Additional responsibilities as agreed.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Articulate with persuasive and engaging verbal communication skills and excellent written communication skills (English). Similar communication skills in other languages (particularly French and Chinese) desirable but not required.
• Ability to translate and package a complex programme portfolio into language and visuals suitable for conveying TRAFFIC’s work to existing and potential supporters.
• Previous fundraising experience, ideally including fundraising strategy design and a track record of success with securing individual contributions of GBP50,000 (USD75,000) or more from foundations, trusts and individual donors.
• Knowledge of the use of social media in cause marketing and fundraising.
• Strategic, organized and results focused.
• Strong networking, relationship building and diplomacy skills.
• Able to work on your own initiative and collaborate with and motivate others working as part of a multi-cultural team.
• Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office.
• Educated to degree level or equivalent.
• Interest in biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.
• Eligible to live and work in the United Kingdom.
• Willing to travel internationally.
