BACKGROUND
The Convention on Wetlands is an intergovernmental treaty which brings together 168 National Governments with a shared commitment to the wise use of all freshwater, brackish, inland saltwater, and coastal ecosystems, otherwise known as ‘wetlands’. As part of their commitment, 2187 Ramsar ‘Sites’ have been designated, one of the largest global network of protected areas and covering a surface area about the size of Mexico.

Building on this important basis, the Convention now seeks to promote further actions that prevent, stop and reverse the loss of wetlands. A new global priority initiative called ‘Wetlands, Culture & Livelihoods’, will support two pillars that are critical for pursuing this vision, namely culture and finance.

A new position for a Manager, Culture & Livelihoods, has therefore been created and will be responsible for the ‘Wetlands, Culture & Livelihoods’ initiative.
JOB DESCRIPTION
• Lead and develop a new programme of work on ‘Wetlands, Culture & Livelihoods’, with main emphasis on managing all aspects of implementation and reporting on a three year project, initially funded by the Mava Foundation, called ‘Celebrating Culture in Wetlands’..As part of the project,
o Expand and deepen the ‘Ramsar Culture Network’, a community of individuals and organisations that connect with each other in order to celebrate and strengthen the role of culture in supporting the vision of the Ramsar Convention.
o Develop membership benefits and activities within five areas that connect with other interests and priorities for the Convention: Natural Heritage; Art & Architecture; Food & Agriculture; Leisure, Recreation & Tourism; Children’s story-telling
o Give the greatest emphasis to expansion of work in the areas of: Food & Agriculture and Leisure, Recreation & Tourism. Lead successful fundraising efforts in these two areas.
o Collaborate with two highly experienced consultants on the other three areas of thematic focus.

• Lead or support Ramsar partnerships where culture is a key issue (e.g. UNESCO World Heritage Center, IUCN Natural Heritage, and others).
• Work with relevant individuals across the Secretariat and other bodies of the Convention, where culture is clearly relevant, to ensure joined up thinking exists.
REQUIREMENTS
  • At least five years of experience working in a field relevant to sustainable development and experience in the field of culture and/or livelihoods issues, is essential

• Master's degree in a relevant field

• Knowledge of issues relating to wetlands, food & agriculture, and recreation, tourism & leisure, is an advantage

• Demonstrated ability to build opportunities and secure financial support for projects

• Experience working with individuals or organisations across multiple cultures

• Strong academic credentials and background in a relevant field

• Willingness to travel

• Fluency in spoken and written English is required, additional languages desirable
SALARY
The gross annual salary for this position is between CHF 50'178 and CHF 62'722, subject to deductions for social security contributions and second-pillar pension, and before tax. While this is an indicative amount effective as of the current date, changes may occur as per IUCN's compensation practices without prior notice. The same applies to other organisations hosted by IUCN.
