BACKGROUND
The Convention on Wetlands is an intergovernmental treaty that provides the framework for national action and international cooperation for the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands and of wetland biodiversity and services. It is the first of the modern global multilateral environmental agreements and remains the only one devoted to a specific critical ecosystem.

The Convention Secretariat has its headquarters in Gland, Switzerland, where the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) provides some administrative services for the Convention.

The Convention Secretariat has its headquarters in Gland, Switzerland, where the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) provides some administrative services to the Convention’s Contracting Parties for the operations and implementation of the Convention.

Under the supervision of the Content Communications Officer, the post-holder provides communications support and undertakes assigned activities and tasks to increase outreach and public awareness about wetlands and the Convention.
JOB DESCRIPTION
1. Communications Channels
• Contributes to the development, management and maintenance of the Convention’s website www.ramsar.org. Contributes to the overall web strategy and creates web content, updates, announcements, news stories, presentations, publications, other materials;
• Supports the Secretariat’s communications through drafting of documents and materials as requested;
• Prepares the Convention on Wetlands newsletter (3 times a year); identifies a story line for each newsletter highlighting the work and progress of the Secretariat in fulfilling its mandate and relating it to global processes; monitors statistics;
• Manages assigned social media accounts with responsibility for proposing a strategy for the assigned platform(s) and generating content under the guidance of the Content Communications Officer;
• Coordinates the production of internal videos including filming and post-production. Serves as the Secretariat focal point with external video consultants and vendors;
• Manages the Convention’s YouTube channel;
• Monitors and tracks usage and user experience with the Convention website, social media platforms and other publicly available resources and provides regular reports to the DSG and management.

2. Support production of technical products and documents
• Provides advice on ensuring STRP outputs are clear and accessible, and relevant to target audiences;
• Carries out communications outreach for STRP’s outputs; and identifies opportunities to communicate previous STRP publications;
• Monitors usage and application of STRP guidance and provides reports as requested for STRP and the Standing Committee;
• Oversees the design and production of print and electronic documents and communications assets which may include reports, technical guidance, promotional materials, flyers, social media assets, web pages, etc. Serves as the Secretariat focal point with external graphic designers.

3. Branding
• Responsible for ensuring that brand guidelines are followed within the Secretariat and serves as the focal point for brand related matters with external stakeholders;
• Undertakes an annual review of the Convention website to ensure content is current and that brand and style guidelines are followed.

4. Communications, Education, Participation and Awareness (CEPA) Programme coordination
• Supports the CEPA Oversight Panel in delivering their mandate under the direction of the DSG and in coordination with the Content Communications Officer;
• Focal point for CEPA-related activities in the workplan of the Secretariat and contact for CEPA focal points.

5. Administrative support
• Responds to various communications requests and inquiries from internal staff and external stakeholders;
• Ensures relevant communications lists and contacts in the CRM are current and up to date;
• Administers contracts, procurement processes, and invoices for various consultants and vendors.

The above job description contains the main duties and responsibilities for this position. However, in the Secretariat of the Convention on Wetlands, staff members are expected to undertake other tasks that are reasonably allocated to them, but which are not part of their regular job description. Where any task becomes a regular part of an employee’s responsibilities, the job description will be changed in consultation with the employee and Human Resources.
REQUIREMENTS
  • A commitment to nature conservation and sustainable use

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in business, communications, international studies or other relevant field

• Minimum of five years’ experience in a communications role in an international setting

• Strong writing and editing skills; ability to turn technical information into compelling stories and to prepare high quality written communications (correspondence, briefs, website articles, concept notes)

• Experience in using design professional software such as InDesign, Canva, etc and producing high quality print documents and social media assets

• Demonstrable experience in video production

• Experience in developing social media content and managing social media channels

• Experience working with web content management systems

• Experience in creating and planning targeted communications campaigns

• Fluent in spoken and written English. French and Spanish language skills beneficial

• Ability to work independently and deliver quality products within agreed deadlines. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail

• A strong aptitude and ability to communicate both informally and formally. Well-developed presentation, interpersonal and networking skills

• Experience working in a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary environment

• Awareness and understanding of cultural diversity and gender issues and commitment to incorporate these in their work and in the relations with the Convention’s constituency
