Research Officer – Central Asia

TRAFFIC International is a charity and limited company registered in the UK. TRAFFIC’s head office, based in Cambridge UK, provides worldwide leadership, coordination, cross-regional and corporate functions. TRAFFIC’s local engagement is managed through programme offices operating under the auspices of the UK charity, with staff based in a hub office and at other strategic locations where necessary. Programme offices operate within a geographic area of responsibility focused on one or multiple countries where TRAFFIC aims to help deliver priority programme outcomes. TRAFFIC works in strategic alliance with IUCN and WWF on wildlife trade issues.
PROJECT BACKGROUND
TRAFFIC, in collaboration with Fauna and Flora International (FFI), the Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity of Kazakhstan (ACBK) and Ekomaktab, will be implementing a two year INL funded project entitled “Strengthening Capacity & Fostering the Will to Combat Wildlife Crime in Central Asia“. This project aims to build law enforcement capacity and will to combat wildlife trafficking (CWT) across major hotspots and trade routes throughout Central Asia, including Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan.
The contract will be issued as an independent entrepreneur with a monthly payment range from 900 to 1100 USD.
The Research Officer – Central Asia will support the successful implementation of the TRAFFIC activities under the FFI led INL Project “Strengthening Capacity & Fostering the Will to Combat Wildlife Crime in Central Asia“. The role will work in close collaboration with the lead organization FFI and all other project partners.
The Research Officer will be responsible for the collection, input, interpretation and analysis of wildlife trade information in Central Asia.
The Research Officer – Central Asia will work in close collaboration with other TRAFFIC staff and offices, and with external partners and organisations such as WWF and IUCN.
SPECIFIC DUTIES
• Works and liaises with government stakeholders in Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan to support improved data collection, management and analysis procedures and lead the technical delivery of data sharing and training workshops.
• Collate, analyse, and synthesise data and information on wildlife use and trade information in Central Asia.
• Write technical reports based on the collected data for a variety of different audiences (e.g. conservation practitioners, government authorities, private sector partners).
• Design, plan and carry out interviews and physical and online surveys to acquire information about illegal wildlife trade from governmental organizations and other sources in Central Asia.
• Supports in the organisation of meetings and workshop.
• Support the implementation of TRAFFIC´s component of the INL project “Strengthening Capacity & Fostering the Will to Combat Wildlife Crime in Central Asia”.
• Supports technical reporting and provides support, i.e. organizing meetings and workshops
• Supports project development, identification of suitable donors and partners, and development of project proposals that support the delivery of TRAFFIC’s programme in Central Asia.
• Responds to general enquiries that are directed to TRAFFIC and represents TRAFFIC in media events as appropriate.
• Communicates the nature and results of the work that TRAFFIC undertakes and represents TRAFFIC at designated international meetings and conferences, and reports on these meetings.
• Maintains links and good working relationships with FFI, ACBK, Ekomaktab, WWF, IUCN, governmental and intergovernmental agencies, and other relevant NGOs in the Central Asia Region.
• Regularly reports on the progress of surveys to the Project Manager- Central Asia
• Undertakes other tasks relevant to the project as assigned.
SUPERVISION
Consultants
• Bachelor or A university degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., statistics sciences, Agro-economy, forestry, biology, environment or any other relevant field). • A minimum 5 years’ experience in wildlife conservation. • Experience in wildlife conservation, preferably with government or an international non-governmental organisation (NGO) / Inter-governmental Organisation (IGO). • Prior experience on data collection and managing with a strong ability to synthesize information. • Prior experience in research, analysis and report writing. • Strong organizational skills, including attention to detail. • Fluency in English with excellent English writing skills with working knowledge of any other languages an advantage. • Ability to work independently and to set own work priorities as appropriate and a capacity to meet deadlines. • Excellent communications skills. • Must have experience working in Central Asia, ideally in Kyrgyzstan. •Knowledge of Russian (or at least one official language from the region) |
