ORGANISATIONAL BACKGROUND
TRAFFIC is the leading non-governmental organization working globally on trade in wild animals and plants in the context of both biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.

TRAFFIC International is a charity and limited company registered in the UK. TRAFFIC’s head office, based in Cambridge UK, provides worldwide leadership, coordination, cross-regional and corporate functions. TRAFFIC’s local engagement is managed through programme offices operating under the auspices of the UK charity, with staff based in a hub office and at other strategic locations where necessary. Programme offices operate within a geographic area of responsibility focused on one or multiple countries where TRAFFIC aims to help deliver priority programme outcomes. TRAFFIC works in strategic alliance with IUCN and WWF on wildlife trade issues.


PROJECT BACKGROUND

Thousands of consumer goods contain wild plant ingredients, which are often harvested from highly biodiverse ecosystems by rural communities for whom trade is a critical source of income. A growing number of wild species in trade are threatened with extinction as demand outstrips supply and available habitats decline. TRAFFIC works on achieving a sustained reduction in illegal wildlife trade, and on enhancing conservation and livelihood benefits from sustainable and legal trade in wildlife resources. This is achieved through engaging and influencing key stakeholders: governments, businesses, communities, consumers and inter-governmental agencies. One of such areas of work is on facilitating the market transformation in the natural ingredients sector with a focus on wild-harvested plant ingredients.

TRAFFIC has been contracted by the German Bundesamt für Naturschutz to undertake a market and stakeholder analysis of the MAP (Medicinal and Aromatic Plants) sector in Germany, organise a roundtable meeting among the most important players and to develop a stakeholder engagement and communication strategy that will lead to a increased uptake of measures that support sustainable trade and harvesting of MAP resources.

TRAFFIC is seeking a project manager to lead on these activities and work in close collaboration with relevant TRAFFIC staff.

The Project Manager – Sustainable Use of Plants will be responsible for the successful implementation of the project stakeholder study and target group consultation on Medicinal and Aromatic Plants in Germany.

The role will work in close cooperation with other TRAFFIC staff members, will ensure timely delivery of all activities and outputs and project reporting to the donor.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

• Undertaking a market analysis of the MAP sector in Germany and of the relevant stakeholders in Germany, including industry, consumer groups and other influential players.
• Writing up the findings of the analysis and research and formulate recommendations.
• Plan, organise and implement a “Round Table” meeting of the most important MAP stakeholders in Germany and summarises results in an internal report.
• Design and develop target group-specific communication and awareness-raising materials for different stakeholder groups, including digital flyers, website content, press articles and social media posts.
• Coordinate all project communications, including the project technical and financial reporting.
• Responds to general enquiries that are directed to TRAFFIC, and represents TRAFFIC in events as appropriate.
• Communicates the nature and results of the work that TRAFFIC undertakes and represents TRAFFIC at designated international meetings and conferences and reports on these meetings.
• Supports TRAFFICs work related to the trade and use of medicinal and aromatic plants and collaborates with relevant partners and donors.
