BACKGROUND

The goal of IUCN ESARO’s dryland portfolio within the People and Landscapes thematic area is that “Dryland landscapes are sustainably managed to protect biodiversity and contribute to local livelihoods and national economies”. IUCN will use its influence to encourage and assist societies to promote good governance and to respect local knowledge to ensure that dryland and related ecosystems are sustainably managed. To protect Drylands Biodiversity, IUCN addresses the underlying constraints to effective natural resource governance, builds the institutional capacity for sustainable natural resource management, and supports access to markets for the products of sustainably managed drylands. IUCN emphasizes building the capacity of local environment and development partners, empowering natural resource managers, and enabling them to influence policy processes that will lead to sustainable investment and resilient livelihoods.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Intern will support the work of the Senior Programme Officer, Water & Wetlands/People and Landscapes in the implementation of projects within the People and Landscapes Programme.

Specific Responsibilities:

(i) Assist with research and writing of, technical reports on desertification, land degradation and drought; sustainable land management and biodiversity conservation;

(ii) Assist with the analysis and identification of stakeholders in project sites using appropriate tools;

(iii) Assist with the research and compilation of a compendium of tools, methodologies and case studies used globally to support approaches promoted by the people and landscapes programme e.g. tools on mainstreaming the ecosystem approach, decision support tools and community based natural resources management;

(iv) Assist in the compilation of communication materials to raise awareness and promote People and Landscapes Programme projects;

(v) Assist with short-term project tasks as needed.
REQUIREMENTS
  • A Ph.D. or Master’s student, who has studied in Natural or Environmental Sciences (e.g. Biological Science, Environmental Science, Geography, Ecology, Agriculture) or interrelated disciplines

• A proven high standard of interpersonal, communication (oral and written) and teamwork skills with a demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with a broad range of individuals and groups from a wide range of cultural backgrounds

• Excellent report writing, proofreading and editing skills with a strong command of the English language in its written and spoken form

• Excellent research skills and ability to work independently towards a clear goal

• Good knowledge and skills in the use of relevant computer programs

• Demonstrated professionalism, maturity and sound judgment

• A high level of organisational skill; excellent attention to detail
