IUCN CEC Programme Officer

REPORTING TO: IUCN CEC Chair and CEO, PCI Media Impact
BACKGROUND
The IUCN Commission on Education and Communication (CEC) is one of six expert Commissions and forms an integral part of the work of the Union. The CEC is a network comprised of more than 1,200 experts world-wide and promotes effective communication and cutting-edge capacity development to create positive conservation change.
Combining modern technology, social media and international networks with traditional approaches such as face-to-face professional development sessions, CEC members promote two key ideas. First, everyone has a role to play in nature conservation. Secondly, education and communication are essential for positive environmental change. Working with experts from around the world, CEC showcases successful approaches to communicating for nature. Composed of professionals from a variety of fields — university professors, scientists, media representatives, filmmakers, communications and marketing consultants — CEC fosters collaborative partnerships in advocating for sustainability. Some of the diverse areas in which CEC members are active include capacity development, strategic communications, conservation psychology, social media, educational technologies, environmental information, environmental security, learning, leadership, and behavior change through community engagement. The candidate will coordinate and support the operations of the Commission in close collaboration with the Commission Chair, Deputy Chair and Steering Committee.
CEC Programme Support
• Facilitate collaboration between CEC Chair, Steering Committee members and commission members to design, implement and evaluate CEC programmes
• Track CEC programme implementation to ensure institutional commission deliverables occur in an efficient and timely manner
• Create annual work plans, budgets and schedules for successful completion of CEC mandates
• Manage and produce communications products of the CEC
• Support capacity building efforts of CEC and proactively engage commission members
• Support the overall governance of the CEC, including membership affairs, Steering Committee meetings and reporting on the implementation of its strategic plan, and the management of Commission funds
• Coordinate with commission members to ensure programmes and CEC activities are accurately and compellingly communicated
• Collaborate with the Steering Committee, Regional Vice Chairs/task force chairs and partners to apply the M&E framework and its tools to demonstrate the impacts of the projects and activities
The Programme Officer will also provide support to the CEC’s flagship program #NatureForAll. They will:
• Play a central role in the advancement of #NatureForAll and meeting the objectives of the programme
• Facilitate and consult with the Steering Committee to help identify and implement approaches related to #NatureForAll, and maintaining the development of partner networks
• Facilitate the preparation of annual work plans and budget in accordance with the priorities established by the #NatureForAll programme and its strategic plan
• Track and report on #NatureForAll programme expenditures
• Support fundraising efforts for the programme and regional portfolio

• Undergraduate degree in sustainability, environmental studies, social sciences, including anthropology, or communications, or a development-related field • Experience in project management • Experience in creating work plans and budgets • Strong knowledge of IUCN • Strong academic and creative writing skills • Ability to work as part of a larger team, but also to work independently • Ability to facilitate and manage teams • Understanding of the context of developing countries and experience working in international settings is desired • Demonstrated capacity to work well under pressure and successfully manage multiple deadlines and competing demands • Knowledge and practical experience for effective development of knowledge management and other aspects of work related to Commission’s mandate • Relevant IT skills, including website portal management, social media and perform work on the CEC BlogSpot at cectalksnature.org • Excellent written and spoken English is essential • Availability to travel internationally |
