This is a local recruitment. Only Indonesian nationals are eligible to apply. The remuneration and benefits package for this position is established with reference to the local labour market and in line with the IUCN conditions of service for Indonesia.

Appointment of the successful candidate will be contingent to availability of funds.

The Sumatran Rhino is arguably the most endangered large mammal on Earth, with fewer than 100 individuals surviving in at least 9 fragmented sub-populations across Indonesia on the islands of Sumatra and Borneo. Over the past five years, government agencies and NGOs working on Sumatran Rhino conservation have convened a series of workshops to develop a comprehensive plan for the recovery of the Sumatran Rhino. This plan includes the in-situ protection of viable populations in Intensive Protection Zones, and the capture of all other Sumatran Rhino to bring into three Sumatran Rhino Sanctuaries to be managed as a single, national breeding program.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

The Sumatran Rhino Coordinator will be the IUCN Species Survival Commission (SSC) representative in Indonesia regarding the Sumatran Rhino Recovery Project. S/he will act as the manager of the Sumatran Rhino Recovery Project, coordinating project implementation partners, securing project permissions, overseeing the implementation of project activities together with their government counterpart, and working closely with the Project Steering Committee. S/he will also act the main point of contact in Indonesia for the Sumatran Rhino Survival Alliance, the international group of organizations fundraising for the Sumatran Rhino Recovery Project.


SPECIFIC DUTIES
• Establish and manage a Sumatran Rhino Project Management Board consisting of representatives from the Nature Conservation Division of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, IUCN SSC, and implementing conservation groups,
• Liaise with the Government of Indonesia on all project activities to keep the abreast of the work and ensure their continued support,
• Support the KSDAE Sumatran Rhino Project Officer so they can effectively fulfil their ToR,
• Help secure permissions for all project activities in partnership with the KSDAE Sumatran Rhino Project Manager and the implementing conservation groups,
• Liaise with the Rhino Joint Secretariat, keep them up to date on project actions, successes and challenges, and work with and through them to ensure effective communications with the Government of Indonesia,
• Oversee the day-to-day implementation of grants provided to the implementing partners under this project and help them to adaptively manage timelines, budgets, and actions should challenges occur,
• Build a team spirit amongst all project partners so that everyone is putting the success of the wider project ahead of their own institutional needs. This includes holding regular face-to-face dialogues will all partners together,
• Manage and supervise the Capture Team Manager including overseeing the capture budget,
• Manages crisis communications in Indonesia if and as needed, including coordinating with implementing partners and coordinating with the Sumatran Rhino Survival Alliance for global crisis communications,
• Keep in regular communication with the Program Manager (Nat Geo/SSC/GWC), the IUCN SSC Asian Rhino Specialist Group Chair, and the Chair of the IUCN SSC to keep them abreast of progress and challenges and draw on their help and expertise as and when needed.
• Carry out other relevant tasks as may be assigned.
