BACKGROUND
The IUCN Global Marine and Polar Programme (GMPP) is based at IUCN Headquarters in Gland, Switzerland and provides vital links for the Union and its members to all the IUCN activities that deal with marine and polar issues, including projects and initiatives of the Regional Offices and the six IUCN Commissions. Its coordination role is above and beyond the policy development and thematic guidance that it undertakes to provide to assist governments, communities and NGOs alike. The Programme’s goal is to conserve marine and polar biodiversity by promoting, influencing and catalysing sustainable uses and equitable sharing of resources while protecting marine and polar ecosystems.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Marine Programme Officer will support GMPP in its activities to deliver IUCN’s Ocean Ambition; By 2030, a healthy ocean supports nature and people, governed by strengthened national and international legal frameworks and sustainable investments that retain and restore ocean and coastal biodiversity and associated services for future generations.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The incumbent shall:
1. Support GMPP’s project portfolio management activities include:
o Lead the development of new projects with support from technical consultants;
o Help guide, track, monitor ongoing projects and communicate results from the work in the field;

2. Support other thematic areas of GMPP’s project portfolio, including:
o Undertake research; collate/synthesise information/input; coordinate input; represent IUCN at events and fora; work with regions and members to implement projects; participate in proposal writing;
o Coordinate and write-up IUCN-led project evaluations in collaboration with internal and external partners;
o Assist GMPP in its strategic guidance role for major marine initiatives;
o Identify and strengthen thematic linkages across GMPP’s portfolio.

3. Support technical and financial project reporting to donors;

4. Support overall communication and outreach efforts for GMPP projects;

5. Work in proactive support of the new business lines that have been implemented to refocus IUCN’s Global Programme;

6. Support the Monitoring and Evaluation of project performance ensuring established protocols are adhered to.

7. Carry out any other tasks as directed by the Senior Programme Coordinator, and the Director, GMPP.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Master`s degree in marine biology, environmental law or related field
• Very good understanding of contemporary environmental issues and an ability to synthesize complex technical science
• Excellent working knowledge of English and French
• Strong communication skills
• Multiple years of international project management experience
• Very strongly motivated by environmental and sustainable development issues
SALARY
The gross annual salary for this position is between CHF 86'330 and CHF 107'913, subject to deductions for social security contributions and second-pillar pension, and before tax. While this is an indicative amount effective as of the current date, changes may occur as per IUCN's compensation practices without prior notice. The same applies to other organisations hosted by IUCN.
