Senior Agriculture Advisor

The Senior Agriculture Advisor is part of the Water and Land Team in the Centre for Society and Governance and will contribute to developing the strategic direction and priorities of the Team and the Centre, and ensuring alignment of agriculture activities with that strategic direction. The Senior Agriculture Advisor will ensure that IUCN’s work on sustainable agriculture is consistent with and contributes to IUCN’s intersessional programmes of work. The Senior Agriculture Advisor will ensure the engagement of members and commissions in developing and delivering the strategy on sustainable agriculture, as outlined in the Operational Framework and other programme plans.

The Senior Agriculture Advisor is responsible to deliver IUCN’s programme of work on sustainable agriculture, ensuring IUCN-wide input to and ownership of the strategic direction, coherence in delivery across regional programmes and global centres, and building institutional capacity to meet those standards.
The Senior Agriculture Advisor works within the Water and Land Team in the Centre for Society and Governance. As a senior member of staff they contribute to developing the strategic direction and priorities of the Team and the Centre, and ensure alignment of agriculture activities across the other three Centres on Conservation Action, Data and Science, and Economy and Finance. The Senior Agriculture Advisor will ensure that IUCN’s work on sustainable agriculture is consistent with and contributes to IUCN’s intersessional Nature 2030 programme of work. The Advisor will ensure the engagement of IUCN members and scientific commissions in developing and delivering the strategy on sustainable agriculture, as outlined in the Operational Framework and other programme plans.
Specific responsibilities include:
1. Embed and grow IUCN’s programmatic approach on sustainable agriculture in alignment with the Nature2030 strategy and the priorities of the Centre for Society and Governance and the Water and Land Team, including:
a. Grow the relevance and develop the global leadership of IUCN in the field of sustainable agriculture according to emerging global issues and opportunities and according to IUCN’s institutional values and mandate
b. Ensure support for, and commitment to deliver the Operational Framework on Sustainable Agriculture from regional and country programmes and across the four global centres
c. Ensure the operational framework remains relevant to the evolving priorities of IUCN, updating as required in consultation with IUCN stakeholders
d. Develop strategic partnerships with IUCN members and commissions to inform the programmatic direction, implement IUCN Resolutions, and deliver work on sustainable agriculture following a one-programme approach
2. Provide leadership to enable IUCN units to deliver actions for sustainable agriculture that are coherent with IUCN’s strategic direction and meet established standards and approaches
a. Build relationships with funding partners and help teams and programmes to develop a strong portfolio of sustainable agriculture projects that are aligned with IUCN’s strategy, tools and standards
b. Lead the generation of knowledge that informs IUCN’s strategy on sustainable agriculture, coordinating across global centres and teams to ensure different tools and approaches are consistent with the strategy and are aligned consistently across IUCN’s agriculture work across different landscapes
c. Support the development of IUCN’s institutional capacity to grow its overall portfolio of agriculture experience and impact to deliver the operational framework
d. Ensure consistent quality in learning, knowledge sharing and communication around sustainable agriculture
3. Lead IUCN’s policy engagements on agriculture to influence national and international agreements
a. Develop IUCN’s engagement strategy for influencing international policy and coordinate engagements across thematic and regional units
b. Develop agreement across the IUCN Secretariat on key policy messages and work across units to harmonize and amplify the messages
c. Represent IUCN’s position on sustainable agriculture in international fora and with external partners, including multilateral organisations
d. Assist other IUCN representatives to transmit policy messages on sustainable agriculture
4. Support the development and manage staff within the Water and Land Management Team to deliver the programme of work on sustainable agriculture:
a. Provide leadership and support to direct reports and other staff in the Water and Land team to understand and comply with IUCN policies, procedures and positions
b. Manage staff according to the IUCN performance management system and provide effective support for their career development
c. Support staff to implement effective project cycle management, including development of work plans, delivery of activities, and effective monitoring and evaluation, and ensure funding proposals are successfully processed through IUCN processes (i.e. ESMS and PAAS)
5. Contribute to developing and implementing the programme area on Water and Land and achieving the goals of the Centre for Society and Governance
a. Provide input to programme strategy development and implementation, including advice on aligning Centre priorities with issues and trends in the agriculture sector
b. Lead and/or support the development of pipeline for investment in sustainable agriculture to support the Nature2030 programme across the Land, Water, People and Climate impact targets.
c. Lead reporting on the Land programme area (specifically Impact Target L2) under the Nature 2030 programme
d. Promote the priorities and messages of the Centre for Society and Governance and the Water and Land Team in external engagements

• A Masters’ Degree or above in agriculture or a related discipline • At least 5 years’ work experience on sustainable agriculture and related natural resource governance at the international level, including leadership in influencing international and national policy processes • At least 10 years’ experience in strategic programme development and management • At least 8 years’ experience creating and leading diverse teams to deliver high quality results • Proven ability to raise funds for large projects and to develop viable funding pipelines • Proven capacity to coordinate initiatives with diverse stakeholders, internally and externally, including with government and nongovernment partners • Strong networking and communication skills and ability to work with different partners and stakeholders. • Fluency in spoken and written English, working knowledge of French or Spanish desirable; • Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office package and internet. |
