The IUCN European Regional Office provides vital linkages for IUCN Members, National Committees, Commissions and the Secretariat to governments, EU institutions, NGOs, scientists, practitioners, the private sector and other stakeholders to accelerate the implementation of the European Green Deal, the EU 2030 Biodiversity Strategy and related national and regional biodiversity plans. It provides knowledge and advise decision makers to improve conservation policy and action, connect and engage.

Responsibilities

Working under the supervision of the BESTLIFE2030 Programme Manager, the Communications
Officer will be responsible for the development, implementation, and management of the
BESTLIFE2030 Programme’s communication strategy (ies), products, and activities. This
includes maintaining high standards of communication for the project, ensuring consistent
messaging across various channels, and supporting the team’s objectives in achieving visibility
and engagement.
They will also support communications strategies and activities through the PCA Team’s
portfolio of projects. They will collaborate with global, regional and thematic communications
colleagues, as well as key external partners. The deliverables of the communications officer
contribute to the successful PCA Team and Centre communications.
The Communications Officer is expected to work independently on a variety of activities, with
minimum supervision, to coordinate communications and advocacy approaches and strategies
and convert them into concrete actions and deliverables and drive their implementation.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

• Guide, edit and coordinate the development, editing and production of the
BESTLIFE2030 and other PCA Team and projects’ knowledge products (e.g., reports,
factsheets, thematic briefs, publications), including to align with IUCN style guide(s)
and/or relevant partner, donor or project brands.
• Support and manage the development, update and implementation of the
BESTLIFE2030 and other PCA Team and projects’ communications strategies, including
toward identifying and taking advantage of key events and opportunities for strategic
communications.
• Provide oversight to and manage projects’ specific websites and social media channels
(as identified in each case), including content production, regular upkeep, and manage
the relationship with the development agencies.
• Develop and manage the communications assets of the BESTLIFE2030 Programme,
PCA Team and specific projects, in coordination with PCA communications colleagues
(for e.g. photo library, brand guidelines, communications calendars and other
resources)
• Oversee brand and quality control on communications assets by ensuring high quality
products that are consistent with the projects’ branding and messaging, and by
monitoring and enforcing adherence to the relevant guidelines and protocols across all
platforms.
• Plan, develop and produce BESTLIFE2030, PCA team and other projects specific
newsletter issues, with communication and participation across the Centre and
relevant IUCN Commissions, and regularly analyse its KPIs to improve its performance.
• Plan and create content to support the PCA Team and projects’ communications
objectives at events (e.g. IUCN Congresses) and support the alignment of
communications objectives across the PCA projects during key events.
• Lead and support the implementation of Team and projects’ specific events (online and
in person, as needed, e.g. webinar series, in-person and online events at IUCN
Congresses).
• Coordinate media relations, and communication logistics for events, ensuring broad
and effective outreach.
• Manage the relationship with external consultants/communications service providers
(e.g. projects websites, design and branding agencies etc.).
• Ensure a good coordination for delivering communications products with partners
(project partners, IUCN regional offices, donors as needed, and third parties, including
beneficiaries of IUCN grants), including liaise with IUCN Global Communications and
Membership Units, to provide regular updates on BESTLIFE2030 and other PCA
projects.
• Support fundraising efforts through strategic communications to donors, and
contributions to project proposals’ development.
• Supervise interns when available.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Evidenced professional interest in the vision and mission of IUCN;

• Master’s degree related to communications, social sciences, journalism,
environmental management, or policy;


• At least five years of professional experience delivering communications related to
nature conservation, sustainable development, human rights, or related topics;


• Familiarity with global environmental policies, frameworks and networks/actors. Proven
track record writing high quality communications products on environmental and
conservation topics;


• Experience delivering high quality communications products and publications;

• Expert writing and editing skills: skilled at writing on complex issues for a wide range of
audiences, and for a range of formats e.g. web, impact report, social media;


• Strong teamwork and coordination skills: experienced coordinating across crossfunctional teams to produce communications products. Experience in supervising staff is desirable;

• Strong proficiency with web content management systems, photo and video editing and MS Office;

• Excellent organisational skills, with exceptional attention to detail;

• Ability to deliver on time and to a high standard of quality;

• Can-do, positive approach to learning new skills and collaborating with a diverse, passionate team;

• Excellent written and spoken English required; knowledge of Spanish and French is an asset;

• Ability to work in a multilingual, multicultural and multidisciplinary setting;
