Intern - Digitisation Metadata

Thanks to a grant from the Arcadia Fund, IUCN aims to expand the digitization of our collection to increase the free, worldwide access to the conservation knowledge produced by IUCN.
Sterwat Maginnis is assigned as Unit Manager until the new Director is hired.
IUCN HQ Library serves as the unique repository of IUCN publications and reports and also holds a wealth of conservation-related material in its physical collections.
Thanks to a grant from the Arcadia Fund, IUCN aims to expand the digitization of our collection to increase the free, worldwide access to the conservation knowledge produced by IUCN.
The incumbent will verify, enhance, and update legacy metadata for existing library records of undigitized IUCN reports, parsing out existing metadata according to organizational standards to enable library system migration and properly identify appropriate reports for digitisation and transfer to our digitisation partners.
The intern will consult internal and external sources as well as the report itself to determine elements such as copyright owner, publisher, and record type and then create quality metadata that conforms to existing standards and schemas, inputting that metadata into IUCN’s library system.
Finally, the intern may be involved in preparing shipments for digitization; adding or updating files, individually or in bulk, to records; scanning, compiling, and running OCR on reports; and other tasks.
In addition to time spent on the main project, the intern will have dedicated time to shadow library and publishing staff. We encourage interns to participate in meetings, small projects, outings, and other opportunities as they arise during their time with us.
Duration:
4 months at 50% and on-site at the IUCN Headquarters in Gland, Switzerland

• Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s programme in library, information, or documentation science (or similar). • Professional working knowledge of English required. • Knowledge of French and/or Spanish a plus. • Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational and interpersonal skills. • Competence with Microsoft Excel and rest of the Microsoft Office suite. • Ability to handle documents with care. • Ability to perform repetitive tasks (scanning). |
