BACKGROUND
IUCN’s climate change thematic programme is part of IUCN Secretariat, within the IUCN Centre for Economy and Finance. The Climate Change Team leads IUCN’s global thematic work on climate change, both to limit the future impact of climate change and to help vulnerable communities and ecosystems adapt to unavoidable climate impacts. The team engages on climate issues from multiple perspectives; from advocating for just energy transition to improved climate policy and practice; advancing nature-based solutions for both mitigation and adaptation centred on improved conservation, management, and restoration of natural ecosystems; and guiding climate investments to avoid maladaptation and ancillary negative impacts on biodiversity and nature-dependent livelihoods.

The incumbent will support the Climate Change Team in tasks related to the implementation of its work on just energy transition and nature-positive renewables. He or she will provide assistance in reviewing technical documents, communications, and donor deliverables; and in ensuring the timely coordination of activities and reports among IUCN and partner offices.
JOB DESCRIPTION
SPECIFIC TASKS
The incumbent will undertake the following tasks:

1. Assist in providing on-going analysis on carbon transition pathways strategies and reporting and the implementation of wind and solar project.

2. Support development of guidance for private sector and regulators to avoid and mitigate impacts on biodiversity and nature dependent communities from the implementation of climate mitigation actions.

a. Development of briefing reports on issues related to private sector.

b. Support implementation of the Renewables phase 2 project: Mitigating biodiversity impacts associated with wind and solar energy.

c. Provide dedicated support for the Global Initiative for Nature, Grids and Renewables (GINGR).

d. Develop communications-related outputs, as needed, such as presentations, background research, website content and social media posts.

3. Carry out any other relevant task as assigned by, and agreed with, the line manager.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be a current student (pursuing at least Bachelors degree; Masters preferred) or have obtained a degree within the past 12 months.

• Pursuing or holding a relevant university degree in a subject relevant to energy, natural resources management, conservation science, environmental policy, etc.

• Candidates must demonstrate good knowledge of the energy transition landscape and developing carbon transition pathway approaches with focussed on wind and solar technologies.

• Ability to rapidly research, analyse and integrate diverse information from varied sources.

• Strong written and spoken English, knowledge of French desirable.

• Well versed with Excel and PowerPoint, and other IT skills, such website management, social media, desktop publishing and/or video production experience is a bonus.

• Shows initiative and is capable of working in a dynamic environment, managing multiple demands as well as able to work independently (and virtually if required).

• Thrives in a multi-cultural team environment and has a strong interest in business, conservation and/or sustainable development.

• Good organizational, administrative and reporting skills.

• Ability to meet tight deadlines without compromising the quality of outputs.

• Highly motivated to learn and develop new skills, keen to bring in own ideas.

• A team player with a strong interest to work in an international environment.
