BACKGROUND
IUCN is the world’s oldest and largest global environmental network - a democratic membership union with more than 1,000 government and NGO member organizations, and almost 11,000 volunteer scientists in more than 160 countries. IUCN’s work is supported by more than 1,000 professional staff in 45 offices and hundreds of partners in public, NGO and private sectors around the world. The Forest and Grassland Team (FGT) at IUCN is responsible for developing and executing the global conservation program for forests and grasslands. This includes efforts in primary forest and native grassland conservation, ecosystem restoration on both area-based and landscape scales, and effective rangeland and drought reduction management. The team focuses on addressing threats such as climate change and large-scale deforestation by advocating and implementing practical solutions supported by scientific knowledge.
FGT is looking to hire an Intern to support a portfolio of projects aligned with the team's vision and objectives. The role will primarily involve supporting the day-to-day coordination and delivery of project management tasks. The incumbent will play a crucial role in supporting the successful initiation and implementation of projects during the inception and early phases of the project cycle. The Intern will also support in project development, background research and communications. The Intern will support the team’s work with multiple partners such as governments, IUCN members, Commissions and other partners that establish clear operational mandates for impact delivery, demonstrating the influence and demand-responsive nature of IUCN’s work to donors and investors.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Under the direct supervision of the Programme Officer based in Washington DC, and as an integral part of the Forest and Grassland Team (FGT), the intern will play a key role in supporting the work of the team. This role provides an unparalleled opportunity to delve into the world of ecosystem restoration, climate action, and sustainable development, gaining first-hand experience in influential environmental research and policy-making initiatives.

In support of the project portfolio with a particular focus on contributing to the implementation and technical support, the Intern shall undertake the following specific tasks:

•Provide support to FGT projects as required through the provision of targeted inputs with respect to project development, implementation, and reporting.

•Support effective internal coordination, including in relation to the delivery of project components by other teams and information sharing between different teams, donors, and external partners.

•Contribute to coordinating and facilitating meetings and preparation of reports.

•Support the delivery of (virtual or in-person) knowledge-sharing processes through organising events and technical webinars in coordination with internal and external partners.

•Contribute to project proposals, documents and reports as necessary across the team’s work areas to ensure the accuracy and consistency of IUCN’s approach.

•Assist in the development of comprehensive reports and engaging presentations.

•Any other duties agreed upon with the supervisor and/or Head of the FGT.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Only candidates based in the US will be considered. Preference would be given to candidates based in Washington DC or willing to move for the internship.

• Currently enrolled as a student pursuing at least a bachelor’s degree (Masters or PhD preferred) or a recent graduate (degree obtained within the past 12 months).

• Studying or holding a degree in fields related to natural resources management, forestry, conservation sciences, sustainable development, geospatial sciences, environment policy or similar.

• Proficiency in GIS & remote sensing would be advantageous.

• Availability during standard business hours (9 AM–5 PM, Mon-Fri) Eastern Time.

• Passionate about IUCN's mission and keen interest in nature conservation and sustainable development.

• Proven skills in organization, administration, and reporting.

• Independent and multitasking maven with the ability to meet tight deadlines without compromising quality.

• High motivation to learn, eagerness to contribute ideas, and an insatiable curiosity.

• A team player with a knack for creating strong working relationships in an international environment.

• Excellent command of written and spoken English. French and Spanish knowledge is a plus.

• IUCN North America office currently has a hybrid working modality with 50% attendance required in the office. This is a paid internship position with a monthly stipend of $1500.
