BACKGROUND
The IUCN Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas (Green List) is a global benchmark for fair and effective protected and conserved areas. It recognises and promotes areas that are achieving success in conservation outcomes, equitable governance, and effective management. The Green List programme supports sites in their journey toward achieving and sustaining best practices in governance, management, and long-term conservation impact.

This position contributes to IUCN’s efforts to enhance the Green List’s service offering, providing comprehensive support through data management systems to assess and monitor progress, tailored training and technical resources. The Green List services offer a comprehensive suite of tools launched at the World Conservation Congress (9-15 October 2025, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates), including the online Self-Assessment Tool (GL-SAT), Green List Dashboard, story maps, website, and specialized training for sites and experts. Additionally, the role involves documenting best practices and success stories in protected and conserved areas’ governance and management and ensuring high-quality data for monitoring progress toward Green List Standard.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Programme Officer is responsible for delivering priority initiatives to support the implementation of the IUCN Green List programme, with a focus on operational processes, assurance, and fundraising. Additionally, the role involves documenting best practices, case studies, and success stories to enhance knowledge sharing. The Programme Officer will also monitor and report on Green List progress, support capacity-building activities, and ensure high-quality data management to facilitate informed decision-making. Through these responsibilities, the Programme Officer will contribute to enhancing the quality, efficiency, and impact of the Green List programme.

This position reports to the Senior Programme Development Officer, IUCN Green List, and works closely with the Senior Assurance Officer, Conservation Management Assurance. It also involves collaborating with regional coordinators, site managers, and key stakeholders to develop service offerings and guidance on the IUCN Green List Standard and certification process.

1. Support the development and delivery of services (40%)

Green List Hub and digital tools
• Support the development and management of the Green List Hub in coordination with the team and external providers.
• Maintain and integrate data management systems such as IBEX, WDPA and COMPASS.
• Lead the development of Story Maps and support data collection for conservation impact storytelling.

Capacity building
• Assist in developing and coordinating training courses, including the Green List Standard course, the training of site managers and assessors to improve their understanding of assurance processes and COMPASS, and webinars.
• Provide support for Green List accreditation course content development and coordination.
• Assist in training site managers and assessors on assurance processes and the COMPASS system.
• Prepare monthly status reports on Green List participating sites progress and country engagement.

Communication and events
• Compile and showcase case studies and best practices from Green List sites.
• Contribute to the Green List value proposition publication.
• Assist in organizing Green List events and the Pavilion at WCC 2025, with a focus on logistics and outreach activities.

2. Support to the Green List certification process (30%)

• Support the coordination for the Procedures Guide development and production.
• Support preparation of site dossiers, coordination, and tracking site submissions for Green List Panel reviews.
• Assist in tracking listings cycles, and coordination on announcements and communications to happen in a timely manner.
• Support data extraction and reporting for monitoring Green List progress.
• Support the management of COMPASS, ensuring data accuracy, entry, and updates for Green List sites.

3. Project delivery and fundraising (30%)

• Support the implementation of the Protected and Conserved Areas Team’s programme, contributing to key projects and ensuring effective delivery.
• Assist in budget monitoring and financial reporting for the relevant projects.
• Assist in fundraising efforts, including implementing fundraising plans, identifying potential donors and partners, and leading or co-leading proposal development as needed.
• Engage in communication and outreach efforts, highlighting the team’s successes and increasing visibility among stakeholders.

KEY DELIVERABLES

• Certification processes for candidate sites tracked and facilitated, ensuring timely dossier submission and assessment.
• Green List Panel meetings supported with quality site dossiers, proper documentation, and administrative coordination.
• Green List assurance strengthened, including dossier management, certification tracking, and COMPASS data updates.
• COMPASS Green List database regularly updated and maintained.
• Green List Hub developed and delivered (October 2025).
• Data reporting and tracking mechanisms for Green List site progress improved.
• Green List Standard training course developed and launched (April–October 2025).
• Training modules and webinars on Green List processes and best practices designed and conducted.
• Story Maps and Green List Value Proposition case studies produced and published (October 2025).
• IUCN Green List Procedure Manual updated (October 2025).
• IUCN WCC Green List Pavilion successfully planned and executed (October 2025), with key milestones promoted (preparations from April–October 2025).
• PCA projects (Tech4Nature, OECM projects, BIOPAMA, BESTLIFE, etc.) implemented with technical support.
• PCA fundraising plans developed, with funding proposals co-designed (ongoing).
• Potential donors, foundations, and private sector partners identified.
• Monthly status reports on Green List progress, country engagement, and technical support delivered (April 2025 – March 2026).
• Budget monitoring and financial reporting for Green List projects supported.


The above job description contains the main duties and responsibilities for this position. However, in a small organisation such as IUCN, staff members are expected to show flexibility in their approach to work and be willing to undertake other tasks that are reasonably allocated to them but which are not part of their regular job description. Where any task becomes a regular part of a staff member’s responsibilities, the job description will be changed in consultation with the manager, the staff member and the Human Resources Management Group. REQUIREMENTS
  • • At least a bachelor's degree in a field relevant to nature conservation
• 3-5 years of relevant experience in protected areas management, conservation, or data management.
• Demonstrated experience with database management, data integration, and working with digital dashboards and platforms.
• Previous experience with IUCN Green List, protected areas, or similar conservation standards preferred.
• Proficiency in data management systems and tools, with an ability to analyse and synthesise data for reporting purposes.
• Proficiency in both English and French is essential.
SALARY
The gross annual salary for this position is between CHF 86'330 and CHF 107'913, subject to deductions for social security contributions and second-pillar pension, and before tax. While this is an indicative amount effective as of the current date, changes may occur as per IUCN's compensation practices without prior notice. The same applies to other organisations hosted by IUCN.
