BACKGROUND
The Global Ecosystem Management Programme is based in Nairobi, Kenya but has hubs in Switzerland, US and UK with the following functions:

Nairobi, Kenya: Head of Programme, Global Drylands Initiative, Red List of Ecosystems, Ecosystems based Adaptation (BMU, UNEP), Islands Initiative (which is further outposted to Mauritius), some communications, overall programme administration and functional financial management, formal reporting lines to the Nature Based Solutions and Rights Group

Gland, Switzerland: Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), support to CEM (Commission for Ecosystem management), some overall programmatic and communications support, formal financial responsibility, formal integration with the Nature Based Solutions and Rights Group

Washington DC, USA: GLISPA (Global Islands Partnership) coordination

Cambridge, UK: Focal point for the Red List of Ecosystems (RLE) in the IUCN Species Programme Office in Cambridge
JOB DESCRIPTION
The primary role of this position is to support the implementation of the Ecosystems Protecting Infrastructure and Communities (EPIC) project. This project aims to document the role of and improve ecosystem management for disaster risk reduction (DRR) and in doing so contributes to climate change adaptation. It will promote ecosystem-based DRR and ecosystem based adaptation as integral to DRR and climate change adaptation policy, planning and programming through evidence derived from six case studies (addressing different hazards in varied landscapes), build national capacities for ecosystem-based DRR and engage in global awareness raising.

In addition, the Programme Officer will carry out tasks related to further developing IUCN’s work on DRR, including links with ecosystem based adaptation. This may include conducting research; supporting proposal writing; supporting drafting of position papers and brief; communications; delivering on strategic activities at global events and engaging with partners, especially the Partnership for Environment and Disaster Risk Reduction (PEDRR).


SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Support management and delivery of the BMU EPIC project by:

• Supporting, advising on and monitoring the day to day implementation of EPIC in Burkina Faso, Chile, China, Nepal, Senegal and Thailand, in close collaboration with the IUCN regional and national offices as well as with external partners of EPIC.
• Coordinating the six-monthly and annual reporting to IUCN and the donor
• Lead the work planning with the six country teams, including budget revisions and re-allocations
• Act as an information liaison for project implementers and facilitate communication and knowledge management as the project progresses
• Explore synergies with other ongoing IUCN and non-IUCN projects for wider lesson sharing and strategic alliance building
• Conduct in-country monitoring missions, as required
• Identify and engage technical experts as required by the project

Other duties:
• Continue to build partnerships for building on the EPIC project work – through the Partnership for Environment and Disaster Risk Reduction as well as networking with other relevant organizations
• Assist the Senior Programme Coordinator in related communications and knowledge exchange with partners
• Assist in seeking opportunities for funding and writing funding proposals to build on EPIC and increase IUCN’s portfolio on DRR
• Further desk based research on the role of ecosystem services and environmental management for DRR
• Assist in drafting and publishing papers related to EPIC and ecosystem-based DRR
• Carry out any other tasks as required by the line manager
REQUIREMENTS
  • Master’s Degree in a relevant discipline (land use, natural resource or environmental management, climate change or other relevant academic field)

• At least 3 years of relevant professional work experience

• Experience in working with governments at different levels, UN agencies and international NGOs

• Ability to work effectively within a large decentralized workforce of professionals, in a multicultural setting

• Organizational experience, including a proven ability to work on a variety of tasks simultaneously, and to perform well under pressure.

• Excellent written and spoken English and French

• Excellent interpersonal and networking skills, especially within multi-stakeholder contexts

• Available for field travel
